At first I thought that giant image was an enormous living turd putting on sunglasses.

Yep... still think that.

The next step I guess would Network Administration.....but I don't know if I want to take the plunge or not. I'm not in a hurry to get into the IT field. But I can't say it's not an appealing offer given how ***** the economy is, and how necessary admins are.

Don't do it, you will literally want to kill yourself. Network admin seems like a cushy job that's easy to do but it's an enormous pain in the ass that can require days of research and more knowledge about how things work than you will ever need to know.

slightly related: I recently had to diagnose and fix a PMTUBH which until a few days ago I had never heard of, and in doing so learned more than I ever really wanted to know about how the internet works - or rather, how it breaks.

Right. That's dermonster's snappy comeback thread. Common courtesy dictates that you start your own.

I stand corrected by your superior knowledge of courtesy.

I think the real problem here is the term 'guru' here being used to compare one's own competency against that of one or two generations back. I mean, I had to teach my grandfather that when writing an email you could click where you want your cursor to be, not backspace the whole thing to change a typo in the first line. That doesn't make me a guru. It makes me competent. In his eyes, yes, I'm probably made of magic and computers are wishmachines, but again, that does not make me anything special in anything outside his own rather outdated perspective.

So I guess my point is that "How you became a tech-guru in the eyes of a non-savvy grandparent" would be a more accurate title for this thread.

Also - dropping stupid image macros makes you look like the key word in this sentence. And it wasn't "dropping."

Back on topic, I'm trying to follow your advice, but am having trouble. Lend a hand, O guru?

Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong :\

Remember, on a computer, you don't address yourself as me, you address yourself as 127.0.0.1.
You can also address yourself as localhost.
Now, on Windows, yelling like that is okay, but *nix is a bit touchy, so you should speak calmly.
So, to ping yourself, you'd tell it to ping 127.0.0.1 or ping localhost.

If you can yell at Windows, what can you do to Mac?

It's not that hard, all you do is find your own IP address, then type 'ping (your IP address)'
