State of the Game
« on: December 31, 2010, 07:26:29 pm »

So I'm sorry if this is entirely inappropriate (Although, I don't think it is), but can I ask for some help here? I can? Great!

So the last time I played was RIGHT as the new version of dwarf fortress came out, (Now old) that added the massive farms that covered most of the generated worlds. I never played this version as I was in the middle of a Mega Project (Which I never finished, but hope to recreate and still do [Some of you might have seen it a few months ago, It's essentially digging a castle out of a block of Obsidian that I'd make, I couldn't do this because of some glitch involving Obsidian Swords not working]) If anyone can remember this time, long ago, back when I played, can they give me a brief summary of what's changed between then and now?

TL,DR: What's changed in Fortress Mode over the last 5 months?

(I swear I've tried reading change logs, but they're just so technical, and I'm trying to get caught up quickly to help my friend learn how to play in a few hours)

Ghosts. Bury (or honor with slabs) your dead now or you may come to regret it.

Do they attack? Give bad feelings? Cause depression? I am intrigued by these... Ghosts.

Ghosts come only in evil biomes, I think..?
They scare dorfs. Some are hostile.

Also, no longer easy underground farms - they need irrigation.
Also, magma seas.

All the above. And parties.

Any biomes at all. They also fish. And stuff. I've heard of them stealing turtles, determined to kill a fortress by depriving it of shell.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Cool, so nothing earthshatteringly important? I won't be sieged by ponies with flame-throwers?

Already knew about all the Magma Seas, and the Irrigation.

Not really, most changes lately have been on the adventure mode side of things.

Fights should end soon after one combatant falls unconscious now, due to the new targeting system and some AI changes that came along with it.

Speaking of the new targeting system, Adventure Mode has a new targeting system. And more stuff to do. And more things to kill.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.
