LCS: locksmithing

Why isn't there a locksmithing class?

Yes, I know you could do it for free if you have a smidge of skill, but it's grinding and that can get frustrating.  Maybe the class could require 1 in security to get in?

Personally I don't think it should require a class. I tought myself to pick locks with a coathanger and an allen key. One of the more useful things I learned while living on the street.

Agreed that in RL people can learn these skills outside of a class, but I'd never figure out how to unlock a door.  So, it can be assumed most people can't and you're a freak (but a good one)

It's not hard to learn if you keep at it.

(There is a story behind this. . .)

This is an Alder Omelette. All craftsdwarfship is of highest quality. It is encircled with bands of cheese. It menaces with spikes of bacon, ham, and peppers. On the object is an image of dwarves in egg white. The dwarves are eating.

I can pick most locks easily, and I learned by messing around with an old lock and a nail.... so ya it's easy to learn.

A class should still exist though, as this is something that gets done professionally and it works within the mechanics of the game. It's a more expensive option to learn the skill but less annoying than grinding or recruiting someone who already knows it so they can teach you.

Perhaps you should add an option of forcing a lock open?

Say, assign a door a lock strength and door strength, then add tools which you can use to force a lock open; crowbars, drills, and whatnot. You can open a weak door quickly with tools, but stronger doors will take longer, and very strong doors may not be forced open at all. At that point you may attempt to blow the door open, but that'll alert the conservative swine.

The tools don't require skill and always succeed but come with a few disadvantages:
1. It takes up the weapon slot.
2. It isn't easy to conceal, which may result in you being unable to use a certain disguise.
3. It takes up several turns to open one, and if someone walks in on you, you'll need to stop or you'll alert the conservatives.

Maybe toss in a pickpocket key/switch option. Lockpicking is currently the only way to get into secure areas, no matter how stealthy or well-disguised you are.

Isn't Locksmithing a college course and not university study?

Still it seems a bit more specialised.

Besides shouldn't the Mafia give classes too?

why not give every door health and armor values,
health being just how much damge the door can take.
armor how hard it is to damge the door.
useing crowbars or haveing high skill helps lower the armor level of the door.

doors with low armor i.e. interior doors, hollow core

med armored doors i.e. solid wood doors, doors with bolts

high armor doors i.e. metal reinforcing, dead bolts, padlocks

Forcing doors open already exists, as do crowbars to make the process easier. That's not what this thread is about.
