Sterling silver Forgotten Beast
« on: December 30, 2010, 08:50:39 pm »

Any tips for dealing with a sterling silver forgotten beast? I didn't have a lot of iron to start with, and didn't train up a real military. I threw about 60 dorfs at it, managed to chop off its feet and one of its tails and damage most of the rest of its parts, but... it doesn't look like it wants to die any time soon. I'm digging a (very long) tunnel to the volcano to flood the main level of my fort with magma, in hopes of trapping and melting it, but I'll lose a huge amount of stuff if it comes to that.

1. Throw everyone at it.
2. Reclaim.
3. Do it again.
4. Reclaim
5. etc. etc.

"The Forgotten Beast pushes the militia captain in the head, bruising the muscle, jamming the skull through the brain and tearing apart the brain! The militia captain has been knocked unconscious!"

Well, yes.

Seal him up with some constructed walls, then dig deep and around him for bronze/steel materials.  Worst comes to worst, drop a few z-levels of stone on 'im.  I'm 99% sure that Forgotten beasts are immune to temperature

I'm not so sure on that one, I dropped a mite composed of black opal into the magma sea recently and he died pretty quickly. Not as fast as a dwarf but still.

If you can cause a cave-in, he'll die. Cave-in(s) destroy anything instantly.

What are you thinking? Cage it to use in your arena! If it dies in the line of entertainment , just use it silver then .

Several beasts, including forgotten beasts cannot be caged. Magma on the other hand is quite effective!

Caging forgotten beasts is actually rather trivial if you have a tame GCS.

You can always bait and lure it into an arena, then lock it there.

Hang on, magma sea?  Then it just got obliterated the instant it touched bottom like all other objects do, right?  Thus, it's not quite as relevant to a discussion of magma itself.

While forgotten beasts can't be stunned nor trapped normally, webbing them on top of a trap will cause them to fall in.  Alternatively, physically trapping them works too, by using a series of drawbridges.  I think magma will kill forgotten beasts but I could be wrong, and it may be very destructive if I am.  Cave-ins always work, even if the tile falling is constructed and only one z-level above.

Sterling Silver melts at 11602 U; magma should work.

Inspired by Namfuak's avatar, drop it into a bottomless chasm, if you have one nearby.

Caging forgotten beasts is actually rather trivial if you have a tame GCS.

...and now you have TWO problems.
