Archery Targets Require Architecture??
« on: March 23, 2008, 07:23:00 am »

I noticed when I was building an archery range that the dwarves had to call in the architects to help plan the targets!  This really makes no sense at all - I mean, building a target is about the simplest thing I can think of - you just drag in a hay bale and paint a bullseye on it.  Where in any of that do you need an architect?  Do they need to verify the chosen location against zoning ordinances???

See, it's not that dwarves need skill in architecture, they just need the labor enabled.  So, only the dwarves that you tell to build stuff, like an archery target, will.  That way, you don't get things like your legendary miner stopping his excavation of the gold vein, and instead rush to the other side of the fortress to build an archery target.

He does that anyway.  Unless he's assigned as broker and is needed in the depot, in which case he runs off to dig tunnels (from the far side), since he knows that the dig task is non-removable.

You can stop the dig task by de-designating the tile he's selected to dig. Assuming you've turned off mining by this point, he should then choose the next-highest-priority task available that he can do, like detailing stone, getting a drink, or sleeping, rather than go to the depot.

Does he have the architecture labor enabled?  If so, turn it off.  If not, then there probably is an actual bug.  The whole depot thing is because trading at the depot or having a meeting are, as far as I can tell, really low priority jobs.  Besides turning off all of their labors and hoping for the best, which might give you a small but significant shot at trading before the merchants leave, at present there is not much you can do.
