Pathfinding when digging is way off
« on: November 04, 2007, 04:42:00 pm »

Situation:

...
###
@.#

where @ is my miner, inside the cliff face, approaching the outside.  If I designate one of the tiles between him and the outside to dig, he will attempt to pathfind his way to one of the outside tiles so as to start digging from there, even though a much closer adjacent location is available.  Usually this means running around half the map.  It means I have to build doors and hatches and lock him in so as to force him to dig it out properly.

There's another thread around here somewhere about this. Dwarves prefer to dig from the west above anything else. If not west, they'll go to the east. If both of those are blocked, they'll dig from the north, and if all other cardinal directions are blocked, then south. Can't remember the diagonals, though.

Probably a old dwarven tradition.

I remember reading that post. I think the diagonals were based on the cardinals. In order of preference: NW (prefer W over E, N over S), NE, SW, SE.

Yup, that's what I observed and posted (in several places).
