Spider Retrieval
« on: December 30, 2010, 01:46:20 am »

There is a Giant Cave Spider in my hospital.

He was meant to kill the hammerdwarf that had lost the ability to stand and is therefore incapable of contributing to the fortress. In fact, one of the blue coffins is meant for the hammerdwarf. Unfortunately, the hammerdwarf is still wearing his steel helm and as much as the spider tries, can't seem to penetrate that helmet. Now, the spider is causing much job cancellation. I can't kill the spider since he is the only one in this fort and as you can see from the screen, there are many more dwarfs that need to be eliminated. Any ideas on spider retrieval?

I am giggling uncontrollably.

Just build a new hospital.

build a cage trap, bait him with military?

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

Mod helmets to have 0 coverage, then mod them back after the spider eats him?

Take off your military's weapons (or put one guy in a separate squad and don't assign him a weapon) and have them lure him into a trap.  Or use it for wrestling/armor use practice.

Don't worry. If the spider won't kill that soldier, hunger / thirst will, or he will try to get to drink/ food, luring the spider into the trap.

That is, unless your cripple gets a lucky bite in and kills the spider.

EDIT: I'd build another line of cagetraps behind the 1st one. If your dwarf passes out on that trap, or is webbed, it will be caged, and the spider can get away

What level Armor User is the Hammerdwarf now?

Anyway, one other method is to build a Loom nearby and have a dwarf try to collect the spiderwebs in the corner of the hospital room. Hopefully, the spider will charge the craftdwarf instead and blunder into a cage trap.

You might want to construct a hallway in front first though along with another cage trap. Otherwise, there's a pretty good chance that the weaver will just waltz in and either get killed by the spider or punch it to death.

If the guy regains consciousness long enough to bite, the wonky AI will stop automatically aiming for the head and the spider'll start actually killing the guy.

Does mining a chute over the beds and then dumping a bunch of stones on the hammerdwarf work? I don't know if that kills him, but if it does, then you have a cure.

Dropping 30 floors of stuff and floors might. Must be a precision strike. Only hitting the dwarf.

If i make a channel above the dwarf, and stairs/something else like that, and then designate the hole above the dorf as a garbage dump, then they'll drop all their stuff on him.

I don't think falling objects deal any damage that I've noticed. Then again, I don't drop things more than 2 z-levels unless I'm caving something in or dumping into a volcano.

I have a semi-shelved fort with a natural waterfall 10+ levels high. There was a little accident when I was building walls around my outdoor area across said waterfall, and one falling piece of rock does seem to have splattered a hapless critter at the bottom of the falls. I can't think of another reason why it might have died, at least, so I think dropping something on someone's head could work.

I've seen critters (mostly carp) splatted on the bottom of high waterfalls as well, but with no items around them. I personally think it's because they can't "swim" down the waterfall and so just fall off of it, down the cliff, and since water currently has no buoyancy, splatter against the riverbed.
