Every time I giggle at "Boning Hams" I die a little inside.

And I can't stop.

If only because factories didn't replace the village blacksmith until WWII.

So you are saying that they won't put this into mass use until there is a severe need? Probably true.

What I meant was that they won't replace Shochets. Jewish butchers that slaughter by the laws laid down in the Pentateuch. (Torah as it were.)

They will not be replaced for a long, long time.

The translator/subtitle guy used the word xpand.

This fills me with unlimited rage.

Erm, no. They just sort of died out after WWII because the large-scale industrial base shifted to consumer goods and squelched the American blacksmith under a torrent of mass-produced iron products. So, uh... until the rural butcher's shop... um... faces overwhelming competition from... ah... farm-raised and stockyard-butchered venison products...

Yeah whatever.

Can I just say this is one job I don't think anyone is going to mind losing? I mean, if you made a robot for shoveling horse dung, would your now out-of-work stableboy honestly complain?

They could make a Schochet-Bot, with special rabbi sigils or whatever, and forge the knife blade from the smelted metal of an izmel.

Then give it some testicles, to make it a man.

Mazel Tov, Robo-Rabbi is ready!

Seriously, though, you can't make the mistake of thinking that robobutchers aren't going to be successful because of a non-mainstream tradition that you are holding. That's ethnocentrism at its worst. We all have traditions and mores that differ in some way from what everybody else is doing. If things didn't take off simply because they didn't agree with each person's practice, there would be no Wal-Mart, no news media, and no violence on TV. The loss of .2% of the world's population is not a major factor in this business plan. Especially since pigs (where hams come from) are not kosher meats anyways, and no amount of shechitah is going to change that.
