Soldiers attack. Peasants do whatever they want. If they die, they probably deserve it.

My siege strategy:

1) wait for the army arc
2) train up badass dwarves
3) siege elves
4) siege humans
5) siege gobbos

You could get realy lucky, and forced attacks will be a thing of the past, and each instance of specific entitys will be treated on there own merit. Meaning? You could get seiged by dwarfs too, as long as they wern't your home civ.

Activate alert. See trolls and other building destroyers waste time on slabs and statues. Pull levers a what is esteemed to be strategically the best time, and watch timing generally fail. Unleash war dog nuclear bomb with little success. Witness an access that hasn't been completely blocked or an un-lockable door at an inconvenient place. Giggle as many invaders get nonetheless trapped, slaughtered, or dropped into pits. Send the army towards the enemy at some point. Activate the mist generator once it's all done so that the depressed ones can pretend it's the rain, and not tears pouring on their faces.

I have an outside moat with walls and catapults, first i lock down the front gates and the entrances, periodically during the siege I allow the gate to open and i drop down the bridge. All the goblen path inside the entrance courtyard. i have a checker'd entrance filled with weapon traps with all steel menacing steel spikes, on some of the other squares theres just regular cage traps,on some select few are stairs leading directly below into the other room comprised of weapon traps and my entire militia waiting for the right moment to rush the outside from below and reek havok. oh and all the menacing steel spikes are exceptional quality or masterworks, my weaponsmith is probably sick of getting work orders for steel spikes. and steel mechanisms

Pre-siege :
Step 1 : Cage traps everywhere.

Post-siege :
Step 1 : Watch gobbos get caught in my cage traps.
Step 2 : Send my military to be slaughtered slaughter the remaining gobbos.
Step 3 : ???
Step 4 : Profit.

I haven't had a siege yet, and ambushes generally kill me anyway. I have survived one ambush, but then a new version came out and I forgot about that fort. I only survived it because I locked my remaining 25 dwarves or so inside.

My catacombs overflow, but so do my coffers!

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

Don't do anything, and wait for the pets/cage traps to take down the enemies.

I will use any strategy that looks good to me, by which I mean that I read the earlier books of the Old Testament and gain battle inspiration from them. It's a remarkably good source of military strategy.
For example, I'm building a structure that will allow me to hold two squads in reserve on either side of a passageway. Once it's finished, I will create a squad of useless peasants to send out as a lure, which will bring them right to the designated passageway. Once the enemy is in position, I make the peasants retreat and send the real warriors out of the side rooms to flank and slaughter the goblin menace.

"Make ready my arsenal, Urist!  It is time to show these goblins what we are made of."

"Grand Master Urist, I am terribly sorry, but we have no weapons to fight with, much less armor!"

"Urist, this is unforgiveable.  You call yourself an arsenal manager and yet have no weapons to manage?  What is this madness?!"

"Well, Grand Master Urist, if it can help any, we have these sharp steel spikes we salvaged from the burning caravan a season ago."

"And how many spikes is that, Urist?"

"Four hundred, Grand Master Urist."

"...I have an idea."
