The sad song of the army.
« on: December 28, 2010, 08:36:20 pm »

ok so wtf? training's not a job? killing innocent creatures is NOT A JOB!?!?!

i need some advice here my military dwarves, whether it be training or killing, seem to think they're idling. By now a few have gotten pretty low on the happy-scale and i jsut want to know what i can do to keep their spirits soaring (bad pun, if you like that)

Does it say enraged by long patrol duty? Sparring and killing enemys will give happy thoughts but eventually they will get pissed about being deployed for years on end.

no, usually my dwarves are training in their barracks and they just seem to lose happiness while sparring watchin demos or indiv. combat drilling.
if i have to put squads out on patrol i usually alternate them so thata not a problem.

do you think that if i put statues and stuff in the barracks it would cheer them up?

Read their thoughts and it will tell you exactly whats making them unhappy.

hmmpf, well apparently flies, the rain, and the fact that i've drafted them have brought them down to 75-95 dftherapist happiness

my cats are workin' full time, their barracks is underground, and can't do anything 'bout te draft so i guess i'll get me some statues

I usually make my military dorfs pump operators for the down time in between lightly tapping each other.  It takes a while, but they become legendary pumpdorfs; the course to which as I understand, still makes them stronger in the current version.

You can build pumps without having anything to pump.  [q] and then [Enter] once over the pump allows you to specify it to be pumped manually.  Think of it as a Dwarven treadmill.

You don't actually need to pump anything and I do recommend this for the stats boost.
Having a room full of skrew pumps pushing air is the Dwarven military response to human weight lifting and elven crying.

what I end up doing is building them a big barracks, engraving it and then filling it with tons of expensive furniture
after that, I can set them active constantly and I won't get more than a grovel out of them

Reminds me of a scene in the Conan movie, where Conan is a slave turning a giant turnstyle to build up strength.

It would be interesting to know; are the dwarves actively training, or are they performing 'individual training'?

Also, "complaining about the draft," is in the military sense, not the wind sense. If you put a dwarf with low combat skills into a squad, they'll complain.
