Star Trek - Excalibur
« on: December 28, 2010, 02:59:08 pm »

I'm not a big Star Trek fan, but I've always wanted a game like this :

http://stexcalibur.com/

IMMERSIVE GAMEPLAY
Excalibur breaks the mold of traditional space simulation games by putting the player firmly in the boots of an experienced Starfleet captain. From the outset you will be able to control your character and command your ship as if you were standing on the bridge yourself.

From taking direct control of the helm, to transferring command of any ship in your task force, or even calling your senior staff to the briefing room to discuss mission tactics; Excalibur is the most immersive Star Trek experience ever.

  • Immense open universe to navigate and explore
  • Hundreds of ship interiors and environments
  • Command and micro-manage your task force as you see fit
  • A totally new story which reacts to your decisions
  • Fully functional environments

More info on the site.  I will definately be keeping this on my radar.

Seconded.
I really want to see more about this. I'm even loving the site's navigation!

*Jaw drops to the floor*

I'll have to see it to believe it, but they've certainly got the right vision.  The only thing I wonder about is the "HTML" interface.  What is that supposed to mean?  Is this a browser-based game?  It must refer to the mod tools.

Sounds like a good version of STO to me, watching it with vague interest as a minor trek fan.

At first I was suspicious because of that huge super QUOTE from PC Gamer UK. I did a search though, and it seems PC Gamer UK did write an article:

Quote
Star Trek: Excalibur goes above and beyond the final frontier of modding tar Trek Excalibur (stexcalibur. com) is a fan-made game of startling ambition: Originally planned as a mod for Star Trek: Bridge Commander, it’s outgrown the 2002-vintage engine to become a full (unlicensed) game. The modders-turned-gamemakers are working on the Star Trek game we’ve all dreamed of: the one that puts us in the captain’s seat of a starship. The team behind Excalibur has developed its own engine tech, enabling new visual effects such as nebulae generation, physics modeling and ship model animations that ST:BC couldn’t handle—getting the McKinley Drydock model to physically interact with ships is one of lead artist Mark Ward’s proudest accomplishments. Players can explore and interact with different parts of their ship, too, making repairs or repelling boarding parties. “At first, the driving force was mainly curiosity about how far I could push things,” says Ward. “For a lot of us, that evolved into a desire for professional development as (the mod team members) got older and worked in related industries.” “We are trying to make everything as you see it on the show, while balancing that with what’s actually possible,” says Ward, referencing the game’s complex behavior changes when ships go to warp or separate their saucer sections. “Whereas in Bridge Commander and many other space games when you jump from one system to another in a cutscene, we are aiming to have warp as just a faster method of travel, which means we can handle space battles and warp failure far more realistically.” Excalibur’s team is still at work on peripheral systems, such as weaponry and content creation, and are calling for aid from fellow enthusiasts. But given the recent smiting of a noncommercial King’s Quest fan-sequel, concern about Excalibur’s survival has arisen. “Leaving ST:BC it was definitely a case of leaving a safe and secure home,” says Ward. But with the Trek “Prime” universe out of the limelight, this project may escape CBS’s wrath.

Oh my god, so interstellar space will actually exist? I'd be hooked on that alone.

Just like Hazeron with the having to wait 20-60 minutes to fly between systems in real time and not being able to log out or your ship stops moving? (because said system is unexplored) :P

Of course, Hazeron has wormholes for instant travel, too.

Even if whoever owns the rights to star trek tries to shut them down there's not much that can be done to stop this, swap a few letters here, change some names, and hopefully we will have a game that is teh epic winzorz.

They're still using ship models based on star trek ships and such as well, a universe based on star trek, etc.

In all likelihood they'll end up with whoever publishing them and taking a major cut of the profits. Hopefully very little will change about the game itself.

Was I the only one who thought of this when they saw the title?
