Locking/Unlocking doors physically
« on: December 28, 2010, 08:31:23 am »

I keep an eye on suggestions and don't think I've seen anything like this. Locking and unlocking doors remotely (ie. by the player as god/manager) doesn't seem to fit with the rest of fortress mode where you designate a job to be done, and an appropriate dwarf will take up the job when they have time. Dwarfs have to physically pull levers, so why not have to physically lock and unlock doors? I expect it would need an option like 'lock door from N S E W' to avoid a dwarf locking themself outside when you order an external door shut, or any of the hundreds of situations where a dwarf will stand on the wrong side of the tile being worked on.

This would make some things harder (particularly in shutting off the outside immediately an ambush is detected) but I think it is in keeping with the spirit of the rest of the game. We rely on our dwarfs to implement our will. I can't think of another area of fortress mode with this sort of direct control (probably you can)

trap (including lever) based locks make sense also.

If there is manually locking there should be an option to lock DIRECTLY after building.

of course, if this is implemented there will immediately be issues with dwarves locking themselves on the wrong sides of doors.

But please, AFTER implementing job priorities.

If before, that could be very fun.

of course, if this is implemented there will immediately be issues with dwarves locking themselves on the wrong sides of doors.

So what, we have fun squaired?

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

I don't see why... Am I honestly the only one who still has fun having fun? I don't know about you, but when I say fun, I mean enjoying myself!

I'm not so big a fan of manual locking/unlocking, just because it seems too complicated.

What I would like is the option to build keys to allow particular dwarves through a given door. After hauling gets fixed, make keys out of metal in large numbers akin to bolts, and you get an option to allow dwarves through forbidden doors if you have a key for them.

It would actually give a use to vertical bars being used as a portcullis rather then just a aesthetic way of sealing up your castle. I like this idea.

Individual access to specific doors - enforced by laws, guards and custom, as well as by physical locking mechanisms with keys, would be molto cool. Unfortunately, they'd also open up an entire vat of worms as concerns pathfinding, so they're unlikely to occur any time soon.
