!!Dwarfputing Computers!!
« on: December 28, 2010, 06:29:33 am »

So recently I decided to overclock my i5 750 rig, and I am now running at a cool and quiet 3.6 Ghz. Needless to say this ~35% increase in clock speed has been quite welcome in DF :D It got me thinking, though, there must be someone here with a water cooled monster PC, playing a single threaded ASCII game approx 3mb in size...

What kind of computers does everyone play on?

Zack, my boy, practicality - or the lack of it - has never stopped a Dwarf Fortress player before. You want to find a way to play this game without your eyes? Someone here with the know-how will be able to help you and we'll be damned if we let a little thing like the practicality of a solution get in our way.

Windows XP ;

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
2.08 GHz, 1.25 GB of RAM.

Two hard drives of 18.6GB each.

I don't know what half of those numbers means, but I know they means my computer is a dinosaur !

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

i also have an i5-750!! and its also overclocked to 3.6 ghz and runs at like 35 * C thanks to some 'scythe mugen' ( i think thats what its called) air cooler.  i had it at 4gHz but that was a bit unneccesary.  Unfortunately that computer is still at school and i only brought my laptop home which has a wee lil i3 and my 100+ dwarf fortress is starting to make it sweat XD cant wait to transfer it back to the other computer once i get back though!

Core i3 530 here. Being 32nm the thing is ridiculously overclockable. Even with a mere £65 gigabyte h55m-ud2h I can get it stable at 4.59ghz, although the voltage necessary to do so was not one i'd like to be in all the time. Plus, it needs to be a pretty cold day else my air cooler struggles. I have it clocked at 4.07ghz day to day with only 1.3v, great little chip.

Lets see here:

Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit
AMD Athalon II X4 630 Processor @ 2.80 GHz
6.0 GB ram

Not the most powerful rig, but it gets the job done.

But others might prefer to have the mess contained behind windows to avoid tracking blood all over the their nice, color coordinated floor patterns. Kind of the Ozzy Osborne vs. Martha Stewart debate.

Windows Server 2008 Workstation
AMD Phenom 2 X4 @ 4ghz
8gb DDR3 at 1600Mhz
Windows is on an SSD, and DF is running off my Velociraptor.

Current fortress is running at about 35fps, but thats a full 4x4 embark with a current population of over 200.
