Smelter takes forever to melt an object
« on: December 27, 2010, 02:23:03 am »

So I am trying to melt down some copper cabinets and chests, I designate them for melting and the furnace operators take them to the smelter, and presumably starts playing 52 pickup or something. They have been working on the same damn items for over a game year constantly. They've all become legendary furnace operators, but they cannot seem to defeat the copper chests.
They can melt down non-locally produced items no problem. Goblinmas presents get melted fine. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm pretty sure there was some sort of chest-related melting bug mentioned a while ago. If it's still there, you'll never be able to melt them down.

And since my only explanation was "dabbling furnace operators," I'd say it's probably still there.

Seems you found a feature that allows for the easy training of furnace operators.

How many skills do we have now that we can train up to infinity at high speeds with negligible resources?

True, I suppose that is a pretty easy way to train furnace operators. Glad it is already known. Weird bug though.

If you cancel the task while it's underway, does it destroy the chest, or can one metal chest and a few chunks of fuel educate all my little dudes in the ways of furnace-stoking?

In any reaction or job, nothing happens to the items involved until it is complete.  So no, the chest will remain intact, and yes you can use one chest to train an entire fortress in furnace operating.  As with everything else however, it would be easier with magma.

Is there any benefit in having a good skill in furnace operating? Faster smelting?

Naked dwarves remove the need to produce more clothing, which means more of your pig tails can be brewed into booze.
I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.
