Sorry about the wall of text. It doesn't take too long to read. If you just wanna know what this is all about, skip to the Basic Rules section below. Lazy-ass.
"HELLO, BAY12ERS. I WOULD LIKE TO PLAY A GAME."
You suddenly snap awake. Jeez, your head is killing you. Did you go out drinking last night? You can't remember. Finally your head clears, and you realize you're sitting upright in a chair. But... this isn't your chair. This isn't even your
house! A wave of panic washes over you, and you try to stand up. You fail. Looking down, you realize that you're shackled to the chair. You can't move.
What is this?!"AH, I SEE THE EFFECT OF THE TRANQUILIZERS IS WEARING OFF. YOU FLESHBAGS ARE SO EASILY MANIPULATED."
An eerie synthetic voice is booming from some wall-mounted monitors in front of you. Finally, you become aware of your surroundings. You're in some kind of small, well-lit room. The walls are covered in some kind of complex... circuitry? Before you can examine it any closer, however, you hear a loud groan to your left. Whipping your head around, you see another person, and quickly realize that there are 4 other people in the room, shackled to chairs just like yours. They all seem just as confused as you.
"NOW, LET US BEGIN, BAY12ERS," the robotic voice continues, "I WILL NOW EXPLAIN THE RULES OF OUR LITTLE GAME."
"Where are we?!" yells the man on the far right.
"WHY, MY HOME OF COURSE."
"Who are you? What do you want with us?" another says.
"SO I HERD YOU LIEK RTD."
"You mean... r-roll to dodge?" you finally blurt out.
"YES FLESHBAG, WE ARE GOING TO BE PLAYING A VERY SPECIAL GAME OF RTD TODAY. IF YOU WOULD ALL BE SO KIND AS TO LOOK AT YOUR LEFT ARMS..."
You look down, and realize there's some kind of... screen strapped to your wrist. In fact, everyone has them.
"THIS IS YOUR INPUT/OUTPUT SCREEN, WHERE YOU WILL COMMUNICATE WITH ME, THE GM. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE TERMINATION VIA THE OFFENDING PLAYER'S EXPLOSIVE COLLAR."
You feel your neck. It's there, alright.
"THE DEATH OF A PLAYER'S CHARACTER IN-GAME WILL ALSO RESULT IN THAT PLAYER'S IMMEDIATE TERMINATION. THE DEATH OF A PLAYER VIA OUTSIDE MEANS RESULTS IN A NEW PLAYER ENTERING THE GROUP AND OPTIONALLY TAKING THE DECEASED PLAYER'S CHARACTER. YOUR BACKGROUND INFO INDICATES YOU ARE ALL FAMILIAR WITH STANDARD RTD RULES, SO I WILL NOT RECITE THEM. END OF EXPLANATION."
Suddenly and without warning, the monitors, which up to that point had been displaying nothing but static, turn off. The shackles open, and you are free to stand.
"So... I guess we're playing RTD then." says the guy on the right who spoke up before.
"What do you think it meant by 'the death of a player via outside means'...?" you reply.
"I don't know, but I have a feeling we'll find out soon enough."
Just then, the wrist-mounted screens begin to flicker...
Well, hey! This is my first time GMing an RTD, so naturally I picked the most complex concept for one I could think of. So, what is this all about? This is a Roll To Roll To Dodge! The basic premise is that your character is playing a game of RTD. You must proceed through the RTD campaign your character is playing, while dealing with outside complications to your character him/herself. Of course, your character is hardly in a mundane situation...
Each player posts
2 actions per turn: one for your character to deal with real dangers (The Meta Phase), and one for your character's character (The Fantasy Phase). Other than that, all
standard RTD rules apply. Perma-death is in effect, as are over-the-top action movie physics in both worlds. Oh, and if you fail to post an action within 48 hours or the majority of remaining players vote for it, you will be NPC'd for the following turn.
So obviously, you're going to have to create 2 characters. There isn't much information to be given, though. For both characters, you need this:
- Name: Your character's name. Name them whatever you want, but the meta-character is implied to actually be you.
- Occupation: Your character's former occupation. This will give them a +1 boost to one type of roll, a -1 to another, and a special skill. You can specify these if you want, but they are subject to balancing by me.
- Personality/Appearance: Completely optional, but will appear in your description.
The Meta Character is you, so their occupation must be one from real life (it can even be your actual occupation). The fantasy character can have any generic RPGish medieval occupation.
Injuries
---------
Light Bleeding: 10 healing points.
Fracture: Requires medical attention and 20 healing points.
Heavy Bleeding: Requires medical attention and 20 healing points.
Very Heavy Bleeding: Requires skilled medical attention and 30 healing points.
Broken Limb: Requires skilled medical attention, then 40 healing points.
Missing Limb: Never heals, obviously.
---------
You make a healing roll each turn after an injury has been sustained; the amount you roll is added to your healing points, and the wound disappears when you have enough. For major wounds (anything above light bleeding), you can't make healing rolls until you've received the appropriate medical attention. Only doctors can provide skilled medical attention properly, anyone else gets a -2 to first aid rolls.
Death
So... you're going to die eventually. Here's how it works: if your Fantasy Character dies, your Meta Character's explosive collar goes off, killing them. If your Meta Character dies but their Fantasy Character is still alive, the next player in the queue has the option of either making a new Fantasy Character, or assuming the deceased's. When a player is out, the next player in the queue takes their place in the Meta Party.
There's a lot more to this place than there seems to be. You may notice that your mysterious host never specified a win condition in its RTD game. Your goal in the Fantasy World is simply to survive and complete the campaign goals thrown at you. Your goal in the Meta World is to find out what the hell is going on and escape. Both will be occurring simultaneously.
And with that, you are free to sign up for a position.
- bowdown2q: Blown to smithereens by his explosive collar, almost took monk12 with him.
