Channels affected by bug 243 cannot be bridged
« on: December 12, 2006, 10:33:00 pm »

I'm trying to build a bridge across some channels. In one area, it worked - in another, the channel shows a red X for the bridge builder.

After further investigation, I discovered that tiles which show 'channel' more than once in the k view cannot be bridged (they show a red X), whereas channels which only show one 'channel' in the k view *can* be bridged (they show a green X).

Also, I've got a line of channels in which some have only one in the k view, some have seven in the k view... etc. It doesn't seem as simple as bug 243's description, though. I have channels running from a floodgate next to magma. The closest one to the floodgate shows two channels in k view. Each successive one has one more channel shown in k view, *until* it reaches the chasm-spanning aqueduct. The two channels on either side of the aqueduct show only one in k view, and all channels connected to the left of the aqueduct show only one, until they get to other floodgates (apparently).

You can't currently bridge "channel/pond" buildings (the kind you can look at with [q] view).  A "channel/pond" building is removed when it connects to the river/magma, leaving behind a simple channel map feature which can be bridged.  It's underdocumented, like a lot of things, so it gives rise to confusion.

My experience with bridging channels is slightly counter to this.  I have yet to try to bridge a channel which wasn't conencted in some way to a body of water, but I have found that an empty channel, even if "connected" to a river (with a floodgate keeping the channel dry) can not be bridged.   I have confirmed on such a channel that it is no longer selectable as a building with [q]. Still, red 'X's when I try to build a bridge.

If the channel contains water from opening a floodgate (dark blue water flows in normally), filling the channel, you can bridge it.  Also, if the channel contains floodwater (white water) from a seasonal flood erupting nearby, it can be bridged, even if that bridge is built after the floodwaters recede (!).

But the game will refuse to order a bridge built over that same channel if it is not filled with water at the time of the order.

This is speaking from experience today with the game I'm playing now, in version 0.22.120.23a.

I think the channel ceases to be a building (turns into terrain) once it has had water in it. If you have never opened the floodgate, it will still be a building (and hence unbridgable). If you opened the gate, flooded the channel, and then closed the gate, the channel would be empty, but bridgable because it is no longer a building.

Outside it seems that rain makes channels into terrain without needing to be flooded.
