Dating a book.
« on: December 26, 2010, 02:04:42 pm »

I got my mom a old copy of Pride and Prejudice (leather cover, hand pressed) from work for Christmas, but I can't seem to figure out exactly how old it is (no copyright date!) I know the book was written in 1824, so I have a Maximum age, and It's a "Classic edition" so it's not quite that old, but for a book written that far back (especially such a popular one) there's still plenty of time for it to be printed as such and still be very old. Anyone have any idea where to look?

Do you at least have the name of the publisher of this edition?

That I do, but they don't seem to have a website for some reason.

Well, chances are that they went bankrupt before the internet. But googling Pride and Prejudice + publisher's name should bring up some results.

All I've found (just now) is that the company was active from 1883-1937.

Well, that narrows it down at least. But really, it'd be a lot easier to help you if you shared the name of the publisher.

Yes, I thought the same thing. It's a shame that no one shares my love for the dictionary, she's old but she sure knows how to please a man in bed.

You might even say that she defines sex.

Yeah, I don't get the tight lips about this.

Is it hardback?  A. L. Burt apparently did two printings of P&P in 1924 and 1925.  Possibly more.

This list apparently isn't exhaustive, since it only lists hardcovers and he said his is leather-bound.
