now the &s are attacking my face whenever I reclaim. would adventuring or reclaiming with better troops be the best solution?

Ack~  @_@

Have you tried bringing a lot of miners and masons and tunneling into a corner of the map and reclaiming after building up a sizeable well equipped army?

reclaiming with troops seems plausible, but you'd still need to get them to danger room legendary, as well as forge them steel armor and adamantine weapons of the best possible quality before actually engaging the demons.

I'd say give up.  In soviet russia, demons slay you.  It's that way in Dwarf Fortress as well.

Ok I know very little about modding in DF.

That said, is there any way to find the raws for demons and make them evaporate at room temperature, or something similarly easily killable.

Change all creature's class to something else other then GENERAL_POISON, make their blood into a necrosis poison that affect GENERAL_POISON creatures.

That's the trouble, demons don't have raws as they're randomly generated. Instead, you need to mod your dwarves to be unkillable.

I knew demons were generated as you encounter them but I thought the game would create a file for them in the region folder. o well.

It does store generated demons.
I guess you can mess with your file with DF World Tinker or with Editor Wordpad and an uncompressed Savefile.

If you're using version 31.16 or older, you can try embarking with decent weapons and shields for everyone, then use the utility Runesmith to make them into Legendary +5 Fighter/Weapon Skill/Dodge/Block/Observer killing machines ;D

You only need a weapon and shield at that high level skill. I've raided hell with a single squad and I can't recall combat reports reporting that the dwarves were hit at all.

Be sure to make a tomb/memorial/momument to that brave adventurer who took back "Insert Fortress Name Here" for the greater dwarfhoof.  :D

I am going to copy the chicken entry and rename everything chocobo and make it 100x the size of a normal chicken and make it rideable.  Too bad our dwarves probably wont ride them. >_>

Might be because of the wine I drank, but... sigged.

Enter adv mode, steal/buy a lot of shields (8-11 will do) remove them from you backpack and then you have a very deflecting adventurer, train his skills and go to kill
