possible adventure mode bug
« on: December 25, 2010, 11:01:42 pm »

I started a new adventurer, and because I wanted to become a swordsman, I went to a nearby shop, swapped my spear for an +oaken training sword+, figuring I'd bludgeon my foes to death with it. At a bandit camp, I discover that the sword glanced off of clothing, let alone armor. Is this a bug, or normal behavior?

Isn't that obvious?

You are using a training weapon , which is made to create no harm at all And repeatedly glance off armor , grab an actual sword

Well, I'd sort of think that whacking someone with a piece of carved wood should at least bruise them, or are the calculations for damage solely based on sharpness?

Try bashing folks with the flat/pommel of the thing instead of slashing/stabbing at them. You'll do next to no damage but at least you'll have less of the glancing off.

Well, if you're trying to slash them, then yeah.

I think wood is just preposterously weak right now.  Also, training weapons are always blunt, if I recall correctly, so sharpness won't matter.

A really interesting question is whether or not the weapons that elves make (which are, so far as I can tell, designed for war and not training) are interchangeable with wooden training weapons. As someone who exclusively plays elven adventurers, I can testify that elven weaponry consistently bounces off normal clothing, especially leather.

Correct; the reason the pommel strike does so much more damage is because its surface area is 1/300 that of a slash or stab.
