Why did you make 2 topics, instead of moving the first one?

Okay. I have never hitchhiked but I do know that it can be fairly dangerous. At least where I live. You may have to walk through England. And bring a suitcase full of steak. You can eat it raw. And may I direct you to the Wikipedia article on that lovable beast: The hobo.

We British never pick hitchhikers up, that's why we don't have any. I don't know why, but we just don't and it will be fairly impossible to get from one side of the country to the other.

Hike the whole way.

I've hitch hiked quite a bit in England (I live there) and Wales.  It is pretty rare though. The hard part in the busier parts is finding a quiet enough road that's going your way, and/or a good place where a driver can see you from a distance and has got time to slow down and a place to pull over (obviously stay away from the motorways, it's illegal to stop on them or to walk down them). It's harder for a car to stop when there's a lot of traffic. So the more rural the area, the better. Downside being much less likely to get a long ride away from the main roads. You can hitch at motorway services as long as you're not in a hurry. I'm sure you'd have some interesting times, but I'd have a back up plan (like the train or bus) if you really need to get somewhere.

No, just walk!

(I live in Canada, I conceive England as having everything right beside all the other stuff, you're so small...)

Seems pretty accurate to me. (American.)

As an American with experience on England's road system, it would probably be faster just to walk...

Cross country trips are fun though. I don't know how well hitch-hiking in England would go, though I get the impression that Wales or Scotland might be a bit easier.

I don't have much practical knowledge on England in particular, but:
I think you'll do fine. If you are flexible (be willing to hoof it and chat up locals to get rides) and determined there is really nothing to stop you. I've done some traveling and people basically told me it was impossible and I wouldn't make it. Most people can never make the decision to actually get out and try it.

According to Jo Bennet, the travel writer, hitchhiking in Britain is practically impossible, in the end he just walked several kilometers to the train station and took a train.

Ive lived in most parts of England

Hitch hiking across this country is possible just bare a few things in mind

1. lorry drivers, or anyone who is driving for work will most probably not pick you, because it will invalidate their insurance. If they crash you could suw them.

2. generally id say, on a good day, about 1 in every 30 cars or so that passes me will pick me up, based on this, you need to find a road with reasonable but not too high, so as no one can stop easily, traffic to up the odds.

3. Dont look scary, you need to look like the sort of person people would want to pick up. So try to look reasonably well kept, and if its dark where a reflective jacket. Also, one bag, people dont want picking you up to be effort.

4. people will go where theyre going, not necessarily where you want to go, so you have to take what you can get.

5. stand on a straight where people can see you, and slow down to pick you up saftley.

6. the old thumbs up usually works for me, but ive been told a sign sometimes helps. take a decent permanent marker with you, and if you can bits of cardboard or wood make signs on the fly. Your sign should be vague, such as a compass direction, or county, or nearest big city, if its too precise people will use it as an excuse not to stop.

7. get used to lots of people looking out their windows at you in utter disgust. Some drivers, in fact many in the UK are Aholes, just ignore them.

8. if your a girl dont do this. Guys should be fine, but girls are always more vulnerable.

9. if you go through Yorkshire and get stuck, get to an internet cafe, PM me, and i might be able to help you.
