Piccolos and Mugs
« on: December 24, 2010, 11:34:02 pm »

i understand this is beyond inane, but it's making my brain itch a little.

go pick up a mug that accurately represents whatever you consider to be a dwarven 'mug'. i personally envision something around the lines of a Stein - something designed to hold a lot of liquid, and perhaps even look *<*Badass*>* in the process. even scaling down to dwarven size (which, judging by the sheer volume of alcohol dwarves seem to intake, would probably be more of an 'up' than 'down'..), you're still looking at a combination drink holder/club.

now go dig up a piccolo, if you can. usually made of some sort of metal, very small. dwarves wouldnt downsize it, i dont think, but even so, it's not a big thing.

now consider the following - a diorite mug in dwarf fortress weighs two urist.

a diorite piccolo weighs eight.

why?

Simple Answer:  The game's in alpha

Advanced:  See above, append:  and the weights and measures are all stand ins for when things can eventually become cohesive.

Because, mugs are mugs. Whereas Piccolo's are imbued with the power (and weight) of ROCK!!!!!! or METAL!!!!!!

the mug may be big, but that dosent say it has to be very thick. you never know, dropping one might make rock shards fly off in 50 directions. or since its craftdorfship its just logic bending.

It's not Through the fire and flames, but it's close.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

With one Urist representing about one kilogram, thats a pretty hardcore piccolo.

I postulate that dwarves horrendously overengineered the little flute.

I make Grimlocke's History & Realism Mods. Its got poleaxes, sturdy joints and bloomeries. Now compatible with DF Revised!

a piccolo that can play the entire known range of sound, kill a goblin at a thousand yards, cook everything from a basic biscuit to a fine roast, and run dwarf fortress at 150 FPS for a 200 dwarf fortress? =D
