I tried Yeltsin once. I jacked everything to high-capitalism as fast as possible, yet my party rep accused me of being inconsistent with Nationalist ideals. The USSR crumbled (in a slow and rather ugly manner, with countries like Bulgaria refusing to leave the Warsaw Pact even after the USSR dissolved and a bunch of SSRs refusing to leave despite being literally surrounded by seceded states.

The KGB, Military, and Hardliners "overthrew" me at least ten times, but each time I appealed to the will of the people and they got rid of the coup members with ease. Despite the fact that my ministers were advising comically high amounts of cash and deficits to pay for everything, my budget somehow led to nearly everything except the environment going to the "green bar".

I reached the year 2000 before the repeating events and lack of change made me stop playing.

I heard that if you play long enough, an asteroid hits the Earth and kills everybody. At least someone should strive for that.

EDIT: It supposed to occur in 2017, when the game will end.

Indeed. The USSR not dissolving has serious repercussions for asteroid paths, apparently.

Secession. The authors thought the southern districts might secede like Lithuania or Belarus did. It didn't quite happen that way IRL.

Yes, that's what I thought at first too, but...I've never seen any parts of Russia secede in the game, even when I made it past 2010 and had long lost all my republics and allies (except Cuba, of course).  The regions change color, but never turn green and never announce secession, and my population and GNP don't drop like they do when you lose republics.  Maybe it was something the developers planned to implement, but never completed.

Today?  NASA and other agencies that are watching the skies for dangerous rocks with our name on them.  In fact, the same groups that notify you in the game that one's on the way.  IIRC, they've determined there are no rocks out there that could do us serious harm within the next 30 years or so.

In 1992, of course, it would have been anybody's guess.
