Windows and Constructed Walls
« on: December 24, 2010, 07:09:54 pm »

I am curious, what is the limit to windows? Can dwarves and animals see out of them? Could I, theoretically, make a permanent pillbox for an animal, chain it there, and make it out of glass windows? or do they require carved stone or constructed walls?

I never really messed with windows so I have no idea what to do with them or how to make them. =S

Windows to my knowledge work much like walls, with one exception. They do not act as a floor on the z level above.

I also believe there is no difference between between glass blocks and window (outside the floor one z level higher for blocks.)

Gem windows are neater in my opinion though. As you select the indivual gems to make up the window. So you can do multi faceted gem windows or pure windows.

Windows are vulnerable to building destroyers.

Also, glass block walls block sight, and windows don't.

Dwarves can definitely see through windows.  I do not know if they can see through glass block constructions, but I did read somewhere, sometime, that they cannot.

Even clear glass blocks break line of sight?

Yep.  Constructed walls, even clear or crystal glass, block light.  I imagine glass block walls looking like those privacy walls that let light through but distort the image enough so you can't actually see through them.

I... never thought of it that way. That's freaking awesome. I'mma have to build a huge ass aquarium now with that image in mind.

I love windows, so here's the basics of em.
They do not block line of sight and movement. This means, among other things, enemies behind a window will still scare a dwarf, even if there is no path between them (like fortifications).
They are buildings, and need stable ground to build upon (constructed floors, natural floors, doesn't matter as long as it's there).
They will not support constructions on their own.
They will hold back fluids; glass windows are magma safe, while gem ones are not.
Building destroyers will tear them down.

Does that mean one could set up a magma trap composed of a magma reservoir held back by a glass window somewhere where a building destroyer can get at it?

For a single-shot magma trap, yes. Though you could do it just as easily with a door or floodgate.

True. The advantage this sort of trap would have is that it doesn't rely on anyone pulling a lever.

Neither would a door or a floodgate- they would let loose when the Building Deconstructor Deconstructed them.

building destroyers will go for doors and floodgates too, though considering that creatures can see through windows it paints a bit of a different picture of what goes through the destroyer's mind.

Door/Floodgate: Hah! think you can keep me out with a simple door!? ha! there, it's gone hello...lava!!! aaaahhh!!!!!

Window: Hah, nice window they got, I think I'll take it down. hmm, that is some lovely magma on the other side of this....CRAP I DIDN'T THINK THIS THROUGH!!!!!!

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."
