So, um, I picked up this mod and it runs fine, but the character generation screen is pitch black. You can't see the person you are making. One, is it supposed to be black (it certainly is black when you are finished) and Two, (if it is) how do I make the character look the way I want them to?  :-\
I certainly can change all of the sliders and stuff, but there's no preview to help me see what it looks like.
Am I alone here?


EDIT: I figured out a character I liked, but when I lit up my torch I gained no light. This is a graphics issue, not darkness for effect. Argh. Off to the readme I guess.
FOLLOWUP: HAHAH! I turned off HDR and now everything displays fine including the Character Screen. And yes, I was in that exclusive circle, I just didn't know I would encounter that particular issue.  ::)

I love the amount of details. Actually I felt like a rat in a cage (sometimes), what's up with the dense unpassable forest and deadly falls everywhere... But it's better than a totally thoughtless huge plain with mindless quests I guess. The amount of details and the beauty of environment (seriously, all caves and dungeons in Oblivion looked the same, now look here, they look like REAL caves with lots of crazy lighting which produce awesome visuals).

So yeah, it is a bit extreme in terms of "plot rails" for now, but it is really beautiful (and most games do it, for example Risen has the same problem with "rails instead of open world" but in Risen it is much more obvious and less beautiful).

So, I tried Nehrim out. Spawn in a cave. Can't see shit. Stumble around in the darkness for a while. Crank brightness to max -- a little better. Run from troll. Can't see shit. Die repeatedly until I figure out where to go, since I can't see shit. Check map repeatedly to help me find where I'm supposed to go. Can't see shit. Cast healing spell, since it creates light. Finally get out. Can't leave. Go back to the mine. Kill rats? Fuck that. TCL through gate. Die instantly.

Didn't Morrowind get to the "do whatever the hell you want" part in about 60 seconds...

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Yes Morrowind was much better at this. That bothered me as well about Oblivion and Nehrim....but After the mine your free to go.

Consider it a "tutorial" part. It was a bit long for my taste too, but not too bad. Also if you equip a torch you can see much better. After you are out of mine gates, you are pretty much free to go, and the world is huge AND beautiful.

Anyway, I love dark caverns. Torches and light spells have a real use now. Original torches are shit, but you can buy bright ones anywhere, and you can find light spell later.

Hmm...I've seen Nehrim before, but haven't been impressed enough to actually want to waste time downloading it.  You may have convinced me now, however. :)

For those who've played Nehrim, I have a few questions before I commit to trying it:

1. It says the world is practically the same size as Oblivion.  My question is, does it feel like it, or does it feel larger?  Morrowind was half the size of Oblivion, but the world design was so good that it felt 5X bigger.
2. This is related to the question above, but how much of an "open-world" feel does Nehrim have?  Does it feel like it's on rails, or is there quite a bit of freedom like the TES games (tons of off-the-road dungeons to explore, loads of unrelated main-storyline content, etc)?
3. Does this mess up my current Oblivion installation at all?  I have a metric ton of mods on it currently, and don't want them to break because of this.
4. Can mods be applied to Nehrim?  If so, which ones are compatible?  It would bug me not to be able to play with a nice "body" mod, or to not be able to replace some in-game graphics with higher-res ones.  I guess another question to ask is whether or not Nehrim even needs mods at all if it has fixed most of what made Oblivion suck.

1. It feels much bigger; Especially since there is always something to see. In Oblivion there were many, many, many, boring parts and landscapes. In Nehrim you can experience beauty wherever you go.

2. The beginning (first cave and mine) are quite restricted. There`s lots to explore aside from the main quest; Many dungeons, many beautiful places, and some side quests. (There aren`t that many, but most of them feel very unique.) However, to visit some places you`ll have to follow the main quest. For me playing nehrim for the first time felt like this:

1. Follow the Main quest into a new area.
2. Explore that area, visit dungeons, do sidequests.
3. Once it gets boring advance with the mainquest.

I really like that concept.

3. Nope.

4. Nehrim indeed fixed most problems.

Nehrim is great. It feels much larger than oblivion, the starting valley in the middle feels like its around the same size as oblivion.
It has quite a bit of freedom, a great story, including some pretty cool dwarves, crossing dimensions, and giant explosive rockets.
Not sure if it will mess up your oblivion install, as I just deleted oblivion+nehrim when I was done, through I think there was an uninstall feature.
I don't know of mods can be applied, but it really doesn't need them.

Also, you can kill death, and steal his horse and sword, which basically kills anything in one hit.

Just to be correct: That guy isn`t death. As far as i know it`s some Paladin that died during the assault on Treomar.

But you can meet death..

It installs itself into a separate folder, so it does not touch the Oblivion at all.
You will have to disable all the Oblivion stuff(including the Oblivion.esm itself), which, if you have a lot of mods for Oblivion, can be annoying to reactivate everything if you want to play Oblivion again. The readme has a way to bypass this, but I forgot where it was and couldn't find it again.
