Listen to Iron Maiden, their albums are practically history textbooks.

  • It's about sex, drugs and/or violence
  • It's about romance in one of several ways:
    • Having your lover leave you and wanting him/her back
    • As above, but RAEGing at said lover instead of wanting him/her back
    • Finding true love
    • It's absolutely incomprehensible
i could provide you a very large list of fantastic songs that fit in all those categories

  • It's shallow/meaningless/doesn't 'come from the heart'

what the fuck does that mean?[/list]

...At the same time?  Ok, that sounds like a good set of songs.

Iron Maiden does play like a history textbook. 'Run to the Hills'? Indians when the Europeans arrived.

Also, Rush is not shallow and stupid. Listen to them!

(e.g. Dubstep)
I did not know this existed until I had no idea what the hell you were talking about and googled it.

Now I am greatly enjoying it. :3~

As a genre I am not very interested in it, but Beardyman amazes me. Probably the very best at what he does. The music in this vid starts after about 1:30.

I hate him because others do, and others are a massive source of free entertainment when hating someone. In other words-For the lulz.

Jumping on the rails of music discussion, I've mainly stopped listening to Western music due to the (self-identified) fact that almost all of the popular modern music I ever hear about nowadays falls into at least one of several categories:

  • It's shallow/meaningless/doesn't 'come from the heart' (e.g. Justin Bieber)
  • It's about sex, drugs and/or violence (e.g. most of rap)
  • It's about romance in one of several ways:
    • Having your lover leave you and wanting him/her back
    • As above, but RAEGing at said lover instead of wanting him/her back
    • Finding true love
    [li]It's absolutely incomprehensible (e.g. Dubstep)

At least with the music I listen to either I can make up my own meaning for it if I can't understand it or it just sounds good and I don't need to worry about any negative meanings I can't understand since nobody I know can understand them either.
But why does the music you listen to have to have a meaning? If it's good music, surely that should be enough?

possibly he can't analytically appreciate good music and thats the only reason he managed to come up with to justify the idea that his music is better than mainstream music... it's really hard to pinpoint what makes a good song, so people end up pulling reasons out of their asses. but generally, criticizing the lack of originality of the song is a safe defect to point, and quite self evident in the most severe cases, but then you'd have to accept that an unoriginal metal song isn't as good as a pop song with a twist...

anyway, metal is cool, i listen to thrash and death metal, generally local bands, cuz the music is dancey and there's usually a lot of gigs every month. it's my version of disco music, i don't want it to be deep, i want it to be groovy.
i usually don't have a single metal music on my mp3, though, in my mp3 i have stuff like anja garbarek, among other completely unrelated things, when one limits himself to a single music genre, he's crippling his experience

I've had a few music people say that there are only so many basic music structures, and it is mathematically impossible for anybody to come up with something original, though. Criticizing a piece of music for being unoriginal is criticizing almost every piece of music that exists.

It's how you combine them, though. Yeah, it's still limited, but in the way that the number of different human faces is limited by the finite amount of possible gene combos.
