Anyone still playing 40d? Perfectionist can't let go
« on: December 24, 2010, 01:15:17 am »

I've yet to move on besides a little messing around with the "new" version.  Why?  Well I've been playing the same fort since I started two years ago.  Most of the time I'm stuck at about 9fps and have been creating an epic fort.  There have been plenty of mistakes and plenty of over-comings.  I've somehow managed to avoid tantrum spirals and currently my fort is so well defended nothing poses a threat.  I'm doing a bunch of stupid time consuming things for the hell of it, but I have a vision of where my fort needs to be and want to see it through.  I've put too much time into it to give up on it now.  I figure I'm about 3 months til completion after 2 years.  Also, I have no clowns on the map so my biggest threat are goblin hoards (my military is all champions with hundreds of kills each) and the even more dangerous wolf that makes miners run into the moats and drown (the largest casualty cause to date).  I was wondering if there are any other perfectionist/completionists out there like me :)

Also, the new military screen seems so nice yet so daunting to learn :(

There is no perfectionism in Dwarf Fortress.

Three months to go, you say? You're not trying to wriggle out of it are you? :P

I still have my copy of 40d with my first fort still hanging around, even after I finally got 31.17 for adventuring. Now have 31.18 and am playing dwarven adventurers - for the dwarves in my first 2010 fort to draw all over the walls, if I can. X)

I play 40d still, I just can't get my head around the damned military.  I imagine I will eventually.

I'm playing 40d because my computer is too crappy to run DF2010 at a framerate that doesn't make me scream "MOVE FASTER POKEY URIST!".

I'm hoping for this to change, say, sometime tomorrow. But I won't be particularly put-out if it doesn't.

I screamed that in 40d when dwarves would cancel tasks to eat/drink/sleep and not finish the job first. Especially when the job was to build a critical final piece of my outer wall before the goblin siege gets to it.

I've always found the newer versions a bit unstable, that's why I haven't had a successful fortress since 40d. I did however decide that I could still have fun by playing the absolutely wonderful arena mode, as well as by planning for future fortresses when the game evens out a bit.

I have no qualms about starting new forts. I like to keep up-to-date and am constantly modding stuff (so I need to re-gen worlds to implement the changes).

Can you post your fort on DFMA? I love looking at developed forts.

Have the military keep an eye on this one. I don't think he'll ever finish his artifact. :-\

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

At first I was waiting for bugs and other weirdnesses to get ironed out, now I just haven't got round to trying the new version.
