I've Fell In Love With Japanese Ads
« on: December 23, 2010, 06:12:58 pm »

I've recently fallen in love with Japanese adverts. They're like an art form that is as beautiful as it is disturbing (and it is very disturbing).

Is this what weeaboos feel like?

Am I unclean?

As a pseudo-Japanophile, I cannot speak for weeaboos in general, but I am indifferent to their ads (though they make a nice change from wEstern ones). As to cleanliness... that depends mainly on whether or not your love for them is sexual.

Okay, okay, give me a second!

At least one is.

Examples:-
An absolute classic.
A pair of really weird McDonalds ads: 1, 2
"To the girl, now back to the white sauce on the burger, now back to the girl, now back to the sauce..." - I wonder what this ad is focusing on. You see this a lot with the Japanese ads, it seems. It always focuses on the sauce and rarely on the meat of the burger or whatever.
Another one of the "sauce" ads.
Final "sauce" ad that I could find, with a girl that makes watching the advert worth it for her alone. Seriously.

At least one is.
I'll slow you down here to say one of these things is not like the others. I could totally see a western version of this ad and have it be completely normal. Perhaps a lot shorter because it seems Japanese ads are either five minutes long or twelve seconds of confusion, but I wouldn't classify this as a Japanese ad so much as an ad that happens to be in Japanese.
The others yeah, they do it right. Make you wonder what the fuck is going on, mixed with cultural misunderstandings and possible misunderstandings of their own culture as well.

I don't know about Japanese ads, but I thought the thread was "I've fell in love with Japa" for a minute, there.

Carry on.

I try to resist it, but dammit every time I tell myself that you don't ship us all you say stuff like that.

It's the fact that they're sitting at a desk in an empty room talking to a camera and at least one of them seems to be in a schoolgirl uniform.

Also, panty shots.

I don't even get the second McDonalds one.

It's an interview commercial, a common advertising theme. Get some attractive people in front of a camera, tell them to talk about the product, cut to images of the product or common themes of the product periodically.
And really, pantyshots are like cleavage now. It's not worth batting an eye at anymore.

There's a bit of selection bias going on here.  Most Japanese ads are actually pretty boring and similar to western commercials.  Only the crazy stuff gets reposted over and over again and gains internet attention.  It's like judging all western ads on those creepy quiznos commercials.

I see nothing wrong with-
An absolute classic.
Nevermind.

Well, I find most Japanese ads fine, compared to things I saw. Most of them are boring anyways, or just strange.

On that note I am not sure why people see Japanese culture as so alien, if ya cherry pick examples ya can make any culture look kinnda weird.
