Best squad size still 3 with max active of 2?

While going through the DF wiki, I saw a bit that mentioned that there can only be one sparring match per squad at any given time, and thus the above squad set-up is best to maximize non-danger room training.  Have you seen this to be the case in the current version?

I know I've seen a 3-way sparing match at least once with my dwarves, so that info may be outdated.

With the existence of danger rooms, I'd suggest larger squads and mixed weapons so long as you use them.
