The new military screen is confusing as heck

Any ideas on how to learn to use it/get past it?

Assign no military.  Build no weapons.  Train millions of wardogs.

Assign no military.  Build no weapons.  Train millions of wardogs.

Then watch them all die in the next ambush.

Well, I have +30 war elephants. How well do they last in a big fight? How can I assign my army of the elephants to a certain location (most likely only by setting all of them to follow 1 guy, and send that 1 guy to go where I want him to be)

Learning the military system is a huge benefit. Once you understand the scheduling aspect of it, it becomes VERY powerful. I have two squads that alternate guarding the front gate and going on perimeter patrol.

It's a hurdle to get past. None of the interfaces in DF are really that great (why do you think Dwarf Therapist is so ubiquitously used?), but once you finally reach that moment where it all clicks, it helps a lot.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."
