Ugly game? No, beautiful story

I'm either blind or there was no thread on this yet. But yeah, one of the biggest gaming sites just posted an article entirely about Dwarf Fortress, fueled by Matul Remrit, an illustrated Dwarf Fortress tale. An interlude of which can be seen on Youtube.

I'm sure the makers of this impressive thing will show their heads on the forums soon, but for now, we can discuss it here.

While I approve of and enjoy the Kotaku article itself, I don't like how most of the comments are saying that DF should be given prettier graphics and less complexity.

ASCII and overcomplexity is what makes Dwarf Fortress...Dwarf Fortress. DF without complexity and ASCII graphics just wouldn't be the same to me

Wow, that video really captured the DF spirit. But i don't think i saw any booze i it. Anyway, it was a really good video. I haven't read the story yet but i gonna to.

There didn't seem to be much to that article. It just spends a few paragraphs assuring the viewer that while DF may be "ugly" (compared to other ASCII games, or what?) it's really fun... but it doesn't go into much detail about anything. Then it just ends by linking someone else's video.

The video itself, on the other hand...

They overstate the complexity anyway. All you really need to do in dwarf fortress is making sure you don't run out of booze and don't die during sieges, and even the last can easily be done by walling yourself up. Everything else is just for extra challange.
