sorry for the wait, guys... writers block and sliding interest in DF are taking their toll... it'll pass eventually and I'll get back to this when I can.  Thanks for all your support, and I hope I can continue to impress (when I have the time and willpower to make updates).

1st Moonstone, 257, Mid-Autumn

Winters just reared its ugly head. I've been through several of them myself on the surface, but underground, we can just tip back brews and thumb our noses at it.  Our miners have decided our current location is pretty much dead wood now, and I've been hearing a lot of digging noises in the distance lately; a nice rhythm of sorts, with the occasional yell of pain always followed by a string of choice oaths like "DAMN YOU FOR A LAME-BRAINED GULLY GNOME!!". I'm not sure what I have faith in the most; Deler's restraint to inflict serious injuries, or Garth's thick-as-rock skull.  We had another Kobold a few days ago too; Ludoc chased after it, but it was long gone over the hill by then. He is now standing by the doorway murmuring sweet nothings to his axe. I worry about him, but I've tried everything already. He's just gonna need to get fast enough to catch that Eagle, I guess.

It's over.  He will haunt my dreams no more.  It's high time I took a break, now... since I can now outrun Giant Eagles, my training must be paying off, but as they're one of the fastest creatures around, I shouldn't need any more for a while.  What I need more of now is Shorna's booze, and for that, I'll cut this entry short.

1st Granite, 258, Early Spring

About damn time Spring got here, though I didn't really mind Winter all that much. It's a great chance for the younger lads and lasses to get used to being underground a bit more. Ludoc finally caught that Eagle he's been hunting since early last year, and he's now strutting around his patrol posts with a cloak of feathers. Bloody hell, if he can catch something that flies, Goblins don't stand a chance. He's also seemed to grow attached to that axe of his lately, like it's a friend in his lonely hours or extension of himself. Either way, Baron is deliriously happy for all the meat and bones; also, not telling anyone else yet 'cause it might scare the lassies, but while digging out another farm deeper underground we hit that bloody cavern again, which let in that rather big crocodile. Ludoc tangled with it in the water for a bit, and somehow, it got away with only a lopped off toe. Naturally, Ludoc wasn't even scratched. Deler sure knows how to make armor. Maybe I should persuade her to make me a helmet so she can't thump me as bloody hard...

28th Granite, 258, Early Spring

Very few things excite my friend Ludoc more now than the prospect of fresh meat, be it random wildlife, or new hands to help around the place.  Today, 20 more Dwarven migrants arrived, and about half that many in animals. Ludoc, as always, stood guard by the door as they filed in, thumbing his axe for emphasis. No one complained or ran off, though, probably happy to see other Dwarves for a change, even if we are living in a curious manner (at least in their minds).  But they should acclimatize well, as long as we have enough bedrooms. I can't begin to count how much wood we're bringing in, but we're not lacking for bins, barrels or beds. Or trophy cases.

I just hope they like meat, because we have plenty of it. We've got cow, goat, deer, lobster, fish and now eagle. I think there's a new kind of meat running around out there now, too... sack-squat or something? Whatever it is, it runs fast, and its real hairy, or so I hear. Anyways, Vergil's taken census on these migrants already and come up with a list of the new guys and their skills... But I bet most of them are gonna get hauling duty, heh.

Here's an idea. Add [TRAINABLE] tag to dwarves, turn that useless peasant to a war peasant and give him to Baron.

Yes, you can do that, but it only works on peasants.

I had no idea... question, if I do that, will it hurt or crash my game in any way? 'cause that would suck. I like the idea of a war peasant, though.

It's completely safe. Just make sure you modify the raws from data -> save and pick the right region, not from the... Raw raws.

Sorry, Baron, but I think the Peasant is currently more useful as a mindless cubicle drone (bookkeeper).  This should cheer you up, though.

9th Slate, 258, Mid-Spring

I'm so happy I could write this with blood, but I already tried that with my previous journal... didn't hold up so well. Ink doesn't seem to hold well on Kobold hide either, so I'm just writing this on plain paper. One of these days I'll find an animal hide that will hold ink, though, and then I'll... oh, right. Early in the afternoon after I served up my new 'giant eagle steak w/ chopped mushrooms'...

This happened.



Out of the blue, practically everyone pronounced me leader of this place on the spot. I guess it's true what they say; the way to a Dwarf's heart is through his arteries. And liver. Anyway, I'm just now settling into my new role as expedition leader. I've got a nice office, leather seats of course, and have begun making changes. I've first off decided to make use of some of these kittens running around; Deler probably won't be happy, but they breed like crazy anyhow, and meat is meat. Next off, cooking up some of this rendered fat; we've got plenty, and we can always use more prepared meals. I'm beginning to agree with Vergil about not eating those Kobolds, though; they were fairly ugly and nasty. I'm looking forward to the day when we get some Human invaders; or preferably Elves. Or maybe not... hmm... I wonder if it's true, that Elves don't eat meat that often (or at all)? what a scary thought. If so, they probably need some education fattening up so they can appreciate good, solid protein.

I've been collecting bits and pieces of random animals Ludoc brings in, but also some teeth and such from those Kobolds last year. I've had a very nice, large trophy case constructed for me, and am hoping to fill it with some part of every living creature in the world. Wouldn't that be a great collection?

Somethings gone cracked with this one. One of our new people, a clothier goes by the name of erith Lisidavuz, ran across the food storage room where most of us were happily getting our drinks this morning. She's stashed herself inside the crafting hall and is wildly sketching pictures of stacked cloth, more cloth, yet more cloth... I asked one of the Dwarves that came from the Mountainhomes last migrant wave, miner by the name of Cerol something or other, see if he can make sense of this.

"What's she doing in there?" Shorna whispered as she watched him intently.
"Drawing art, looks like," Vergil said with a huff. "very tacky stuff. Least she's not drawing squares and lines unlike some people I could name."
I could almost hear our Engraver rolling his eyes at that. Probably just the drink talking, though.
I waved Cerol over to the door and waited patiently. I worried, though; had she gone mad or something? Turns out she had, though not in the usual sense.
"And she hasn't said anything or talked to anyone since?" he asked. We all shook our heads. "No laughing, no muttering, nothing?" I nodded, and Cerol sighed, though somewhat in relief. "Yes, I've seen it before. Strange moods, they call them; they say old spirits inside the mountains talk to Dwarves sometimes, urge them to create something, though that varies widely. This one's a secretive mood; if the legends are true, there's a spirit basically whispering in her ear right now, and she's drawing what she needs to make an artifact."
"A what?" we said in unison. "An artifact," Cerol replied. "Normally, most Dwarves are only capable of making normal items. But once in their lifetime they get struck with an idea for an artifact; it's such a powerful impulse they'll lock themselves in a room for days, even months on end, trying to create one. An artifact is basically the physical manifestation of a Dwarf's desires, fears, memories and hopes in art form, and each Dwarf can only create one of these magnificent items in their entire lifetime; or die trying."
Ears rang in the silence for a moment, save for the insistent scrape-scrape-scrape of the charcoal stick erith was using to draw. "So... if she doesn't make this thing quick enough..."
Cerol nodded. "She'll either go insane, be stricken with melancholy or go completely berserk. In the latter case, she's probably going to be very dangerous. The spirits give her supernatural ability to endure hunger and thirst until it's finished, but it's only a matter of time before she breaks; and when she does, she's beyond saving. Best we can do is lock her in there until she starves."
"But wait," Shorna piped up. "what if she does finish it? I mean, why isn't she even starting? Because obviously, we have plenty of cloth laying around..."
"It's probably not the right type," Vergil offered. "we've got nothing but pig tail cloth right now. She probably wants rope reed. And judging by how many stacks she's drawing, a lot of it."

So, looks like we're either going plant gathering, or hope some trader finds his way here so we can get our hands on some rope reed cloth... or... or...

Oh, shit.

Baron'll eat her corpse.
