The Journal of Ludoc, Prologue Part 1

"Urist, NO!!" I screamed at him as he ran for the main door. He loudly muttered something about pig tail socks and cured donkey hide shirts as he sprinted ahead, eyes wide with madness. No one seemed to notice; fires had erupted all throughout Gloryfissures, Dwarves were running everywhere screaming in panic and fear as they struggled frantically to get to safety while looking for straggling loved ones and lost property. Loud shouts and laughs came from outside as catapults continued to hurl flaming death over the walls. Only a damned fool would dare build a fortress aboveground, as any good Dwarf should learn. Unfortunately this time, it was the hard way. "DON'T--" I yelled, but it broke off as someone yanked on my arm, breaking my sight away from the mad Dwarf. "Ludoc, let's go! There's nothing we can do for him!" came a clear, ringing voice. Vergil was the same as always; unlike most of his generation, he was a disciplined and rational Dwarf, and I had always been proud to have him as a friend. I simply nodded sadly as he led me through the smoke-filled streets of the city, past the twin 30-foot tall Dwarven statues which flanked the courtyard entrance.

I looked back once to see Urist at the main door, laughing insanely and fumbling with the lock.
I looked back twice to see him screech in triumph, yanking open the door.
I looked back thrice... "MY PRECIOUSSS-- *guk*" He was cut off, as was his head from a Goblin scimitar. The door crashed open to spill forth a tide of black-armored devils. Civilian Dwarves paniced and ran for their lives, even tossing their children to the street to be trampled underfoot by cruel iron.

As we ran through the city streets and surging crowds of paniced Dwarves, I inanely thought that not only was the one who decided to build a fortress here a fool, but whoever was hired to design it the damndest fool of all. The whole place was a hodgepodge of houses, shops and overstuffed taverns, built with no attention to order or efficiency. Huts would be built so they faced the rising sun, or shops at the top of a 10 Z-level tower because the fool thinks it's good advertising. If I ever got out of here, I'd make sure the fools would pay, or I would build my own-- "Look out!!" Vergil threw me to the ground facefirst in a puddle as a bolt whizzed over my head to impact the overhanging sign of the "Purring Maggot Inn". Twice he'd saved me now, I had to make sure I lived to repay him.

I struggled to my feet as the clamor of iron boots drew closer. We had to get the hell out of there, and get to old Garth's house. Everyone thought the old Dwarf mad, ranting on and on about the end of the world and fire breathing demons come to burn the city, but that worked to his advantage; no one would suspect a supposedly senile old man to keep an emergency wagon and full load of supplies ready in case the shit hit the fan. Over the grand bridge and into the town proper now, things were looking up; we could see the militia start to organize, as people filed out of houses either full armored or half naked, while the paniced civilians ran across the bridge. As soon as we cleared it they locked shields and held as best they could; I think we both wanted to help that day, somehow, but us and the Gods knew there were just too many. We finally found what we were looking for, a rather large yet dilapidated old house near the edge of the city.

We ran to the door, nearly out of breath. I banged on the door desperately several times, then again, and again.
"Password?" Crowed an old voice.
I nearly went berserk as my tiredness was completely forgotten. "Garth! It's me, Ludoc! Open this damned door now!!" Still no response. Calmly Vergil shoved me aside and stood before the door.
"This is an engraving of Garth One-eye the Dwarf and Lux Ticklepines the Dark Gnome. The Dwarf is kis--" The door burst open to reveal a red-faced old Dwarf with coarse, white hair and one badly scarred eye. "Alright fine!" He roared, then laughed. "Ye haven't changed at all, lad. I'll never forget that attitude."
A mischievious grin played on Vergil's face. "If you mean that, you better stay alive so you can introduce me someday, eh?"
"Alright, lad. You're just in time, the rest of the crew and all the goods are already loaded. We were about to leave without you, in fact. What took you so long?" I lowered my eyes and sighed. "It's Urist," I said. "He got Boatmurdered Fever."
"Ah," Garth nodded somberly. "He always was a bit unstable. If we're ever going to avenge him, though, we need to leave. Now."

We all nodded in consent and stepped into the house, shutting the door behind us.

-----
A spear embeds itself in a Dwarven throat, guided by the malice and cruel skill of its Goblin wielder. An axe dismembers a Goblin, its head still cackling even as it flies through the air. The streets were soaked with blood, battle still raging, people still screaming, frantically looking for safety. A Dwarf laughs in madness, draining a barrel of Gutter Cruor while dischordantly singing some old drinking song. Born into insanity, most of the population had never known how to be a true Dwarf, instead choosing to live like the Humans in their mighty stone fortresses aboveground.

One wagon left the city that day; unnoticed, out a secret back entrance through the deforested Hills of Joy. They would give them another name when this was over, if there were even any left alive or any who cared.

And Gloryfissures continued to burn.
-----

This is going to be a fortress in a world where Dwarves are at the point where they are trying to build aboveground fortresses like humans, but failing miserably and getting wiped out by Goblins due to poor management and planning. The survivors flee the ruins and make their way to the mountains where they hope to found a new town and teach the Dwarves what it means to be a Dwarf again. This is in Vanilla DF, all civs are closeby, lots of trees, temperate, looks ideal to me. A nearby cave but I couldn't get it in the embark area along with the brook so meh.

Truly, it'd be fun fun to be part of a story worth of a... Story.

Baron Baconeer, doctor of mediocre skill, butcher and a compulsive liar. Madder than a fortful of dwarves and not afraid to show it, he continues his professions due to a strange attraction of peeking to people's insides (and sometimes taking souveniers.) Drives a campaign to allow eating of sapient species amongst dwarves. Prefers to be called a doctor.

You throw him to the mix and I'll be glad to read the progression of this intriguing tale.

Awesome!

I'd like to be xczxcUrist, the happy-go-luck woodworker. Who loves animals and living things. Yeah, he was raised by elves, the poor thing.

a... woodworker? as in woodcutter? who is happy-go-lucky and was raised by elves? Something about that doesn't fit, are you sure?

It scares me too, but considering the state that they had to leave I'm sure that they would have needed everyone they could get.

Anyways, mind if I claim a female dwarf?

Shorna is a Brewer, a Farmer and most of all a Comedian who never takes herself seriously. Having migrated to a lot of fortresses and having met a lot of people, she can get along with or at least understand a lot of other dwarves. However, she has no sense or morality and is basically a cheating bitch, to put it roughly. Likes being called "Keep", "Barkeep" and any other variation of such.

I had to imagine some badass scarred up dwarf with a battleaxe blade strapped directly to his arm over the stump.

A dwarf raised by elves?

Seems like Baron won't be the only one going for cannibalism here.

Great, two more and I can get this thing started. And yes I guess it does make sense, except think, if Garth has been keeping a loaded wagon with supplies and all for this sort of thing, wouldn't he also keep contact with several individuals who he knew would be useful in case his plan was ever implemented? Unless everyone DID think he was a senile old fool until the very end and are just people who stampeded in when the shit hit the fan.

EDIT: Oh yes, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I'll take one of the womenfolk then, Mason dorfette. Just don't let her die when it comes to building the outside walls.

I shall be Deler (translation: steel), the armorer/miner.
She loves working with metals and took a training course in mining a while back. She sees steel as the most perfect of metals, unsurpassed by anything the goblins can muster. She is very rational and doesn't believe in imaginary things like HFS and adamantine, as such things are merely stories told to scare children into doing their chores.

The Journal of Ludoc, Prologue part 2

"The Horn of Parity?" I asked as the wagon bumped along the ground. We had already decided to rename the hills to 'The Furious Hills', in light of all that happened. It still didn't seem real, even though I probably knew the place would get burned eventually. Hopefully, some Dwarves from the city or people from the fields would get wind of all this and flee like us, but we couldn't worry about that right now. "Aye, lad. It's a place I picked out a long time ago; good, solid rock mountains, plenty of trees and wildlife, and even a nearby brook for water." He cursed as he steered the wagon around an intervening tree. "We should be safe there. I doubt the Goblins will be looking in the mountains for a while." I could understand that; they would probably be scouring the countryside for more villages and towns to plunder just like Gloryfissures. But something about what he said bothered me. "What do you mean we'll be 'safe' there, Garth? You make it sound like we're going to stay there."

"Isn't it obvious, man? We're to build a new city, isn't that right, Garth?" All faces turned to look, except the old man. A mason and architect by trade, going by the odd name of Dorfette, had spoke. Garth merely chuckled, and said; "Not exactly, lass. I think we all learned the hard way how that would turn out. No, we aren't going to build a city; we're going to build a Fortress." Vergil laughed at my confused look and patted me on the shoulder. "He's had this planned out all along. Why else do you think he keeps a wagon full of supplies like this?" He took an empty mug from a crate and dipped it into a barrel of frothing Dwarven ale, and clinked mugs in a toast with the one sitting across from him. Shorna, an up-and-coming brewer, known to grow her own dwarven plants in secret for booze, and with wit sharp as hardened steel. She smiled and said; "Maybe he's planning to start a tavern/brothel for those Gnomes he likes so much, eh?" Garth roared with laughter, but cursed anew as the wagon slammed a roadbump, causing the frothing liquid to spill onto their shirts. For once I laughed, and said; "Yeah, and he'll make them lick booze off his chin, no doubt." and everyone roared anew in laughter.

Except one. "Alright, you lot, that's enough! This is serious!" 'Doctor' Baron Baconeer, as he was known, was a former surgeon turned butcher as he couldn't stand keeping focus, having a lot of repressed anger over botched surgeries (in truth, he was more angry he wasn't assigned to autopsy). "Garth, you realize what you're saying, right? Building a new ci-- a fortress? When there's only seven of us?" Garth sighed and nodded. "Haven't any of you ever heard the tales? I'm sure young Ludoc here can relate." I simply nodded and filled a mug of ale.

"From what we know so far, Dwarves lived primarily in the mountains, in vast, secluded enclaves known as Fortresses, collectively called the Mountainhomes. Times were good, and the Dwarves entered a golden age of industry, security and prosperity. They mined all manner of minerals and gems, produced the finest quality of metals, from bronze to silver to iron." I took a drink as one replied. "And steel," said the last Dwarf; Deler, a highly skilled armorer and miner, who always believed in hard work and practical means to resolve any situation. "the crowning achievement of the entire civilization. Steel-clad, highly trained warriors were unstoppable, and most if not all Goblin raids proved ineffectual; until the idiots strained it too far." I nodded at her and continued. "Yes, steel is hard to make, strong as it is. But the real problem started when the ancient Dwarves got so cocky they tried to live like Humans, in their vast, impressive castles aboveground." I sighed; it was true. Dwarven civilization had largely left the ancient Fortresses and was migrating to the countryside and to vast, yet ill-designed cities. This marked the decline of their civilization, for the ones who dominated the caverns and deep places of the world, were no rulers on empty land. The Goblins had proven that. "Before all that, however, the Dwarves had proven so resourceful and skilled that they could build a fortress with only a handful of Dwarves and one wagon of supplies. They could easily reach self-sufficiency status on their own, though it was common for migrants and traders to visit. Small fortresses like that used to dot the whole world, and now they say there's only a handful left, but we lost contact with them a long time ago. I guess they thought us unworthy of being called Dwarves anymore."

Vergil nodded. "That's exactly what we're heading to this place for, isn't that right, old man?" Garth looked back and grinned. "That's right. It's our only hope for survival, as we'd be completely helpless out in the open. I know it sounds a bit far-fetched, but I'm hoping you'll at least agree with me that the Dwarven civilization needs some serious re-education. We're going to be an example; to show all the scattered remnants of our civilization their ancient heritage, so they can once more live in prosperity. We're going to save them from the madness of backwards surface dweller thinking and piss-poor grass wine!" We all cheered and took another drink from old Garth's barrel, while he popped open his own flask. He was very clever to have brewed his own ale and kept it secret from all the thirsty masses in Gloryfissures, I thought.

The sun was rising, casting the landscape in a warm, yellow glow. Trees swayed in the morning breeze, birds chirped and flitted about, and I noticed ahead of us some good-sized mountains, to the foothills of which we were driving. Something awoke in my spirit that day; those beautiful, tall and immovable mountains reaching upwards to the sky seemed to speak to me, 'You are home.' Garth slowed the wagon to a stop, stood up and turned around. "Time to stretch our legs, friends," he said with a grin. "We're here."

The Journal of Ludoc

1st of Granite, 257, Early Spring

"...I told you it's not a problem!"
"Look at it, Garth! You parked in the middle of the brook!"
"It doesn't matter, Baron. The supplies aren't wet, that's what matters. Come on, now; we need food, shelter and fresh water, and it'll be dark soon."
"I doubt we'll be able to build even a small hut before it starts raining--"
"That isn't the point here, lass," he said to Dorfette. "I told you. We're not here to build a city, we're here to build a fortress, and that means Striking the Earth!"

To the confused stares of many Dwarves, Garth grabbed a pick from the wagon, walked over to a nearby wall of rock, and swung as if posessed. Huge chunks of rock cascaded away as Garth swung again, and again, and again, carving a wide path into the rock. Taking the hint, Deler grabbed a second pick and joined him, and together they carved out what looked to be a hallway. Things were off to a good start. "I think he eats the rock," Shorna said with a smirk. "I've never seen anyone dig that fast." Garth was right, though; we needed shelter immediately, and being underground afforded us a distinct advantage against wild beasts and roaming goblins. This was what we were made to do, anyway, being Dwarves and all, so might as well get to work. "We'd better start unloading the wagon, then. Wouldn't want the food to spoil." Everyone grumbled but nodded in agreement and began hauling huge barrels out of the wagon.

2nd of Granite, 257, Early Spring

"...Are you sure it can't see us?" I whispered.
"Ludoc, if it could see us, we wouldn't be standing out here." said Vergil; A giant eagle could be seen in the distance, flying around randomly, though it didn't seem to know of our presence yet. Better safe than sorry, though.
"Still, we should get inside before it does."
"No arguments here."

It was that very moment Garth chose to come out, covered in black dust. "COAL!!" he yelled out to us from the cave mouth, making me cringe. "I found Coal, lads! Good, solid coal perfect for for--" "SHHHH!" Vergil yelled back and pointed at the eagle. It still didn't seem to know we were here. Deler came out, covered in the same dust, though not as excited as Garth. She simply nodded at the eagle and said; "Come on, help me with this door. And we need to *cough* shut off that damned dust somehow."

6th of Granite, 257, Early Spring

We've got a few rudimentary beds set up, and Deler and Garth are both digging out what looks like a farm of some sort. We've taken to making doors out of coal now, but we need some better rock, and soon. Deler is overjoyed, though, as she says we have all the necessary requirements to make Steel. I bet she'll want to get to the forge as soon as possible.
