Speak of meta gaming, if you look at your stockpile for forbidden gears and these number jump up abnormally then there's hidden ambushes  :D

Oh, well I have a nice rig so I usually play 4x4 minimum :/

Ditto on the wood and food though.

I think the best indicator is the blood and gore, mysterious tracts of trampled grass, shrubs, and saplings, and quickly disappearing spider webs, as if some hidden horror were rapidly approaching your fortress. Or that one tame animal that somehow has a really impressive observer skill and sees them from across the map.

You should combine traps, hunters and fishers that nobody cares about, and genetically altered omniscient swine to detect hostiles. Then, soldiers, hunters and traps together to deal with them. I'd suggest farming as much of the plant material you're trying to gather as you can, behind your walls, and accept the losses of woodcutters if you don't want to dig out a very basic underground tree farm. As psychobones pointed out it's actually pretty efficient to get your wood from traders.

But if you play 3x3 you'd get more fps...

You could even play 2*2 with rephikul's turbo charger, and temperature turned off, and 15Z levels.

There are a ton of ways to get FPS up, but I like larger embarks.  :P

If I do a lot of things, a lot of other things will happen too.

I've got an amazing rig(although quad core doesn't really help DF). I've never lost a fort to FPS deaths, however I've gotten as low as 20 before. I just don't like scrolling through all that land. :P

TBH if ambushes are an issue, just wait until you get a massive siege.

I usually do a 5x5 embark and get no lag what so ever...
I may try a 6x6 soon.

I have been known to go back to 40d and use full sized embarks.

If you know how to get 15z embarks I'd pay you an internet coupon to learn how. My embarks are always in the range of 30-35s

playing 40d will do it. 15z levels every time! Game will never crash, and military interfaces are a breeze... You will even get to meet/fight giant frogs!

Forgotten Beasts seem to be akin to Toady playing Russian Roulette with your fortress, as they can be anything from harmless giant worms made of mud to necrotic-gas spewing nigh-invunerable iron hydras of doom.

You could just stop cutting wood and gathering plants above ground, the caverns will provide!  No goblin ambushes, just hordes of crundles, elk birds, the occasional cave ogre and a forgotten beast or two.  And you get neon wood which is way cooler than the boring green aboveground wood.  And no burning sun, my eyes...

At least until Toady codes in to have goblins and caravans able to appear in the caverns at once, a full on goblin siege arriving on the surface and all three cavern layers would be awesome.  :D

I can verify the FPS drop thing.

Unless your embark is super easy for your machine to handle, then the pathing calculations for stealthed creatures will make a difference.

I like to think of this as my dwarves spidey sense...

!!Elves!! would actually be kinda cool as a civ symbol.  !!Clowns!!, however, you get the impression they're on fire of their own free, malicious, evil, will.

Also, much scarier if literally clowns.

the indicators of ambushes in my forts are served by war dogs at the edges of maps and auto-flooders serve the defence  :D
