You could even play 2*2 with rephikul's turbo charger, and temperature turned off, and 15Z levels.

There are a ton of ways to get FPS up, but I like larger embarks.  :P
what would that be? (important part bolded XD)

It's a sweet mod that strips a lot of the bloat features from DF.

Been playing it for a week and I am totally hooked.

!!Elves!! would actually be kinda cool as a civ symbol.  !!Clowns!!, however, you get the impression they're on fire of their own free, malicious, evil, will.

Also, much scarier if literally clowns.

To the original question, keep in mind that thieves and ambushers cannot fly (to my knowledge). As such, a perimeter wall around a good chunk of land surrounding your fortress can help control their appearance. Wall off a large enough area for gathering wood and plants, with a drawbridge entrance that's closed most of the year, opening for migrants and caravans. Behind that, you have various guard animals, so when the bridge is down, and that's the only way for thieves to path in, they're sure to be spotted.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

Just build pressure plates on the entire perimeter of your embark, and have it flood your dining room with magma when a goblin steps on it.

EDIT: Nevermind, forgot sneakers don't trigger the things.

then explain how
a) goblins get mulched at the automatic goblin-grinder?
b) goblins kept flooding themselves down the washer at an old fort's automatic entrance?

You know my current fortress features up to 30 idlers. I can't even use them for my megaproject because I'm doing fine without them and it'll be  a real pain to remember that those two potash makers are masons and that thresher is miner.  So I guess when I'll make enough sharp things I'll have year round border patrols guarding those who travel through my territory. Just like in the medieval fort.

Or you could just train your outside workers in danger room and give them armor and weapon before sending them outside.

Also, if there's a lot of blood outside and it starts randomly moving when nobody is around that might mean an ambush is out there.

Hen Wen from the Chronicles of Prydain is certainly what comes to my mind.  I'd forgotten Disney made a movie based on those books.  Since Lloyd Alexander drew on Welsh mythology for a lot of elements of that series, it would not surprise me if an oracular pig appears in other literature as well.  (It would also not surprise me if this particular element was his own original creation.)

Now I'm imagining, in 30 or 40 years' time, Disney's Dwarf Fortress, and a generation of kids growing up not realizing that DF is supposed to be studded with tantrums, decorated with pools of blood and vomit, encircled with bands of drunken dwarves, adorned with hanging rings of lavish megaprojects, and menace with spikes of cunningly designed mechanical defense systems.

I can verify the mysterious tracks of blood occurence , mainly due to the little itty fact that I have ringed my map (2x2 embark) with iron spears in upright spear traps around the map. 1 each though , I dont have THAT many spears nor ore to waste.
