Virus is gone but still can't connect to the internet
« on: December 22, 2010, 04:57:39 pm »

I got a virus a few days ago but got rid of it. In order to get onto the internet I have to turn off an option of using a proxy server for my browser. Now I can get on but even though the virus is gone I can't turn the proxy server back on, and some of my games that connect to the internet don't work.

What did this virus do? I think it was called security suite. I tried googling but to no avail.

If it's AV Security Suite, look here for starters and good luck. That thing is a bitch to get rid of.

When DOJ boxes get it, we usually wipe them clean and reimage, because it's less hassle (and DOJ doesn't like to take any chances of remnant code)

I already saw that guide. The virus is (mostly) gone. I just need to know how to get rid of whatever it did to make it so proxies don't connect to the internet.

1: Nuke Windows.
2: Reinstall Windows on a not too large partition.
3: Put the remaining essential software on other partitions, and make in image of the Windows partition in case it breaks down in the future, which it will, its Windows.
4: Its a bad idea to put the backup image on the Windows partition.

This sound similar to a virus I got not too long ago.  Except, for me, it still worked for Firefox, just no other browser.  I forget exactly how I did it....but there is a proxy setting somewhere and the virus is trying to route your bandwidth through its own proxy.  So thats why you are having to use a proxy to get around the proxy.  Your normal internet connection is being configured to go through some bullshit IP.  Sorry I cant remember exactly what setting it was, but its somewhere in browser settings or in your network settings.  Look for anything to do with proxy servers and doublecheck that stuff.

Hopefully that helps?

I said I got my browsers to work again, just not my games.

The virus is gone so why is my bandwidth/proxy still being affected?

What did you do to get rid of it? Does any of the measures you took have the potential of fizzledizzleing your internet/network/router configuration?

I used malwarebytes anti virus. Simple scan and deletion.

I might be able to get games to work if I turn off their proxy setting but have no idea where they are or how to do so.

malwarebytes is anti-malware, not antivirus. ::)
Still just as good though.
Have you tried resetting your router?

malwarebytes is anti-malware, not antivirus. ::)

Malware, short for malicious software, is software designed to secretly access a computer system without the owner's informed consent. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.
... Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, dishonest adware, scareware, crimeware, most rootkits, and other malicious and unwanted software or program.

OP, what operating system are you using?

XP. And it's not the router as the other computers connected to it work fine.

Is there some site filled with virus experts?

Fixed.... apparently I had to disable the proxy for explorer as well. Don't ask me why, I was just messing around.

Weird though.... Do all things run through IE?
