Just as long as you don't have an affair with your math professor.

In general, the complete lack of desire to have any sort of relationship--ever--is known as "aromantic."

I wouldn't call myself that, by the way, for anyone who's counting.  I just think it's not sensible to go relationshipping at this part of my life, much as I did when I was younger.

If you wait too long, your eggs will shrivel up, and your window of opportunity will be gone. For this reason, I would disagree with this statement and say that this ten-year period of your life is exactly when you should be relationshipping.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

Why even bother with children? There are more than enough people in the world already, and kids are a serious monetary drain.

Oh my god please no ._.

Not every relationship is carried out with the intent to have children.  Plus, my mom had me when she was 33, so... can't say that I really want to get anywhere near pregnant at 20 =/  It doesn't seem that the result was too bad.

Erm, I suppose I should make that more clear: I'm young enough that "this part of my life" still means "the next two or three years."

Basically, it doesn't seem like a good idea to inflict my turbulent life style on anyone else while it's still driving even me crazy.  There are things I'd like to sort out before diving back into the pit of voles.

Dude, asexuality is not something to be ashamed of. You are on H.P Lovecraft team damnit, thats like the best team of all. If my memory serve, Even Nikola Tesla (the greath man himself) was rather meh about all of it.

So basically i'm saying that's not really something to be ashamed off, and that some of the greatest people (in my opinion) were the same.

Oh come on, you've got to have had a sideways look at a maths professor sometime. You know, wise, caring. Older man, smarter than you at maths, but proud of how intelligent you are. If you haven't thought of bangi- becoming cosy with one of the more ho- kind ones, then my judgment is off.

Well... >_>

Yes, okay, that was a rather dishonest "reaction."  An affair is certainly a "no, no, no, do not want" sort of thing, but perhaps not for the reasons you'd expect.

(That kneejerk reaction was partially due to remembering my writing professor's "advice" and the spirit with which he offered it >_> )

It's more like I see them and I go "Grandpa! <3 <3 <3  Teach me math!  Be my family!"

(Never mind that many of them are younger than my father.  That's a little bit scary, come to think of it)

I love my professors, probably a lot more than I should.  I worry over them, try to learn their home languages, and yes, I do have a somewhat problematic thing for older Slavic men.

The thing is, though, that I hope to become like them.  They're the role models whose standards I'm always trying to pursue, and I care about them both as people and educators.  They're the people I hope will become my social group one day.  That is, in a sense, a "let's become cozy" relationship.

Anything more would be deeply inappropriate, though, on all fronts, so my sideways glances generally get deflected into "look for a young version and see how far you get."

So yeah, that's the official stance: no math-incest, please.  I'm looking carefully for people like my beloved professors, but the age difference is too great to consider at all.  Plus, these people... you know, they're great teachers, but I know they'd drive me so far up the wall I'd be down the other side of the room.  They might be more bearable if they had someone to talk to on a more regular basis--one of them was just telling me that he wouldn't talk to anyone for weeks if he weren't interacting with students--but as-is, personality-wise, I'm going to have to say "Hmm, no."

... Yup.

Besides, being in a relationship with a role model would be So strenuous. It might just be my opinion, and please tell me if I'm alone in this, but it'd be... well... strange, to have a relationship where one person looked up to another. Not in a 'reacher' and 'settler' kind of way, but truly as a role model.

Yeah, my previous relationship had a little bit of that flavor in it, and it just made everything else more difficult (the dude in question had been tutoring me in ... you guessed it, math =/).  It'd just be terrible, because when your struggle with yourself is internal, it's hard enough... but whenever you're sort of letting down your partner's expectations for your own greatness, as well as your own, that just leaves this horribly sickening feeling of imbalance and worthlessness.

So I completely agree with you.  That's one of the reasons why I said it'd be "deeply inappropriate"--the life stages difference and all that would just be horrible for both parties to deal with.  I'm too young and untested, they're too old and mentory, and I'm quite glad to keep our relationship strictly teacher-student.

The math department is really big on faculty-student bonding, anyhow, so I really feel quite satisfied with everything as-is.

Probably because you wouldn't expect friskiness from either a stereotypical maths student, or a stereotypical maths professor. Literature, now, that's where things get raunchy.

On topic:
In my mind sexuality has become a tool, that serves two purposes:
  • reproduction
  • bonding

Which means it only finds application in long-lasting, stable relationships.
One night stands and similar, are a no go for me.

YMMV, but I continue to find this attitude a reliable way to end up head over heels in love.

Literature, now, that's where things get raunchy.

There's graffiti in the girl's bathroom on the bottom floor of Evans that talks about a. sex with math GSIs and b. someone who managed to snag her English professor >_>

So, uh... yeah, I guess the degree of raunchiness is kind of different.  I've never seen graffiti involving mathematicians.

(Of course, there's also a large amount of religious debate/philosophy/relationship advice down there, so ... I guess our bathrooms are kind of weird)

YMMV, but I continue to find this attitude a reliable way to end up head over heels in love.

I think that's almost part of the point, to be honest =/

I'd rather not go looking.  I think I'll be happier in the long run if things develop naturally.

Most of the ones I see are just swearing and racism. I am considering getting a pen and sticky notes so I can correct their grammar and point out the logical fallacies behind it.
