Food thread!
« on: December 21, 2010, 08:07:58 pm »

Pad Thai.  It is awesome.  Thai spices are more flavorful than Mexican spices, and less brutally punishing than Indian spices.  The dish itself is a noodle dish.  It's got hints of both savory and sweet, and it's got a vague flavor of tomato, milder than anything Italian though.  It's still extremely distinctive, the spices really make the flavor, even if you get it not-too-spicy.  And it's often got ground peanuts on.

Most people I know get it with chicken.  I like it with fried tofu.

If you've never experienced thai food, THIS is where you should start.  Go with a friend, get two dishes, and share them.  Other Thai dishes that are really good are Swimming Rama (vegetables with peanut sauce), and absolutely anything with garlic.  Mmm garlic beef.  There's good curries too, often.  Oh, and pro-tip if you're in the USA:  The more Americanized a Thai restaurant is, the stronger the tomato in the dish will be.  If you tried it in a food court and didn't like that side of it, try it in a real sit-down place and it'll be different.

Introduce the forum to your own favorite culinary delights that we might otherwise miss!  Homemade stuff with recipes is also good!

Pad Thai is awesome. As is tom yum with shrimp.

But my favorite all-time "Asian" dish is mapo doufu, a Sichuanese dish. It's blocks of tofu simmered in a sauce of minced pork, chilies, black soybeans and Sichuan pepper. When made right, it's hot enough to make you break out into a sweat just from smelling it. And it is mouth-wateringly delicious.

Favorite holiday treat: Moravian spice cookies. There's been a Moravian Church population in west-central NC for centuries, so these are kind of ubiquitous around the holidays. They're sort of like a gingersnap in flavor, but more complex. And the cookie itself is paper-thin and crispy, so it's like a gingersnap crossed with a Communion wafer. (Or as I once quipped to a Moravian friend, "It's the body of Christ, with sugar and spice!" ...which demanded the follow-up line, "Mmmmm....sacrilicious!")

I'm about to get into 3 to 4 days of epic eattings.

My bro is making a bouillabaisse for my birthday.

Then Standing Rib Roast for Xmas dinner.

Then beef and cheese fondue sometime afterward.

All dwarven culinary creations are of the highest quality.

Other than Sushi, my favorite asian dish I've had so far would probably be Pho, a Vietnamese dish.

It's not that it has some amazingly deep flavor or anything. It's just a meat broth, noodles, some greens.....but it's so hearty that it just fills your stomach and your soul to capacity. Nom nom nom.

Incidentally, the Vietnamese student society here once made T-shirts that said, "VSS: What the pho?"
I LOL'd.

Fish marinated in lime juice with spicey peppers and onions.

Scrumptious.

A couple of weeks ago my family hung some homemade pork sausages and some pork cuts in our smokehouse, and now they're ready, so I'm eating nothing but delicious smoked pork these days. Not picture of my stuff, but looks the same:

delicious smoked pork

Kind of redundant there. Smoked pork is, by virtue of being both smoked and pork, inherently delicious.

Dammit, now I'm craving barbecue.

More pedestrian:  Eggnog with Sprite.  Like many other weird combinations, it's better than it sounds.  It's quite good; it cuts down on how thick it tastes.  (But you don't want to let it sit there too long after you mix it; it's a combine-and-drink sort of thing.)

No offense, but eggnog-and-Sprite makes me think of fizzy vomit.
