I see dwarves having feat-of-strength type competitions, similar to those that exist today (world's strongest man, lumberjack competitions, etc.).

Good point on worlds strongest man. It actually uses some ancient contests that I'd forgotten. One of these would be the Scottish games. Caber toss in particular seems extremely dwarfy.

Dwarfs already make good use of the caber toss. How else do they build bridges from only one side?  :P

How about "Mob Football" like they had in the Middle Ages?

They still do that in Ashbourne; my Mum's home town. Apparently the game has been known to end up in the local pubs. Grudges often resolve themselves during the game. People board up their windows.

Quote
There's a town still plays this glorious game
Tho' tis but a little spot.
And year by year the contest's fought
From the field that's called Shaw Croft.
Then friend meets friend in friendly strife
The leather for to gain,
'And they play the game right manfully,
In snow, sunshine or rain.

Chorus

'Tis a glorious game, deny it who can
That tries the pluck of an Englishman.

For loyal the Game shall ever be
No matter when or where,
And treat that Game as ought but the free,
Is more than the boldest dare.
Though the up's and down's of its chequered life
May the ball still ever roll,
Until by fair and gallant strife
We've reached the treasur'd goal.

Chorus

'Tis a glorious game, deny it who can
That tries the pluck of an Englishman

Just imagine turning up in adventure mode during a game.

Agreed mob football sounds like a perfect fit, but lets keep it contained to a designated zone. It should also cause many injuries when implemented, because that is in essence, dwarvenly. All the Olympic sports mentioned before are a perfect fit, I think we need to put swimming to a use.

Mob football, wrestling, swimming (swimming pools are just 2-wide things made of ramps XD), etc

I really like the idea of mob football and swimming. Wrestling is also cool.
I think most dwarves would prefer mob football over wrestling, so they'll get a ball ASAP.
Swimming could also be possible if water is present in the sports area. this would make dwarves a bit more competent and compensate for their incredibly well programmed and sophisticated Artificial Stupidity.

I wish to suggest a game I played once while LARPing, called Shield and Spear.

One shield is placed at each end of an area, representing the goal. Each team grabs whatever non-lethal weapon they want and sets up wherever they like, often taking up strategic positions on either side of the pitch.
An important figure (also the referee) throws a javelin into the centre of the pitch and both teams have to try and grab the javelin and stab their opponent's shield with it, scoring themselves a point.
It's considered a breach of etiquette to attack someone other than the spear holder or someone about to be the spear holder.
After ten points, or a certain length of time, one team has won. End of game.

Because of the "bring your own weapon" nature of the game, it lends itself very well to military training and incorporates a wide variety of useful skills. Weapon skills, armour use, shield skill, sneaking, throwing, dodging, wrestling, kicking, they're all in there. Since the point is to tackle people and take the javelin, most of the time it's good enough to slow them down, which a couple rounds of non-lethal combat does. Obviously mistakes will happen, so our doctors will receive medical training every now and then.

Thoughts?

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Genesis already has some limited single-person sports, ie. swimming pool workshop (no water required), rockball court for throwing practice, and an obstacle course for training dodging.

I like these ideas, but slow down before you run into the magma vent. The more complicated the sport, the longer it takes to program and put into the game. Wrestling (Or other gladiator type stuff), swimming, and archery sound like great sports that fit the time frame and could be more easier to put into the game rather then baseball football.

Perhaps just have a sort of race game where dwarves can improve speed and endurance. Players could design mazes to make the races last longer and I suppose pressure plates, water, and the occasional crundle trap could make it interesting, or a simple race from one side to the other would suffice as well. Have a piece of furniture that can be queried to be a finish or starting line. One dwarf spouts out an 'Organize Race' job and another dwarf will say 'going to race'. When both of them reach the starting line they make a mad dash to the finish line. Any dwarf that sees it could gain a happy thought as they're friends go rushing down the hallway.

This makes the entire design process enjoyable rather then just plopping down a zone and saying 'Done! I'm on break now.' and it gives players a choice whether they want a trap filled maze stretching an entire floor, or if they just want a single long hallway. One could easily put a danger room into the mix, controlled by either a third dwarf or by pressure plates, and then it can increase military skills. I suppose you could also have the option of assigning squads to the race areas rather then normal civies to prevent unwanted deaths.

Whether the sport is simple or not though, Dwarven preferences should have an affect on how frequently they go and how much they enjoy it. Anti-social dwarves do not tend to go or participate in sports, while more social dwarves will find it more rewarding.

Also, as part of the sporting event, animals should be automatically 'leashed' temporarily in place at the edge of the field so they don't get hurt and go berserk. Now, the occasional Fun accident could occur... but generally we'd not want our Giant War Eagle friends to lose their shit and kill the whole fortress every time a game starts.

Awww , i was expecting dwarfball to be throwing a child dwarf around like a ball

Good idea , Add in Punching or boxing or whatever bullshit you want to call it and remember Royal Shrovetide Football , which makes every single dwarf in the fortress a Player , Ofcourse , non-social dwarves are going to recieve bad thoughts from this while social dwarves will recieve a positive thought
