Deepest Caverns?
« on: December 21, 2010, 06:11:04 pm »

The third cavern layer in my current fort spans 60-z levels before finally ending in a giant lake.

Now, I've seen some big caverns in my time, but nothing this large.

What's the deepest cavern you've seen, and how can I use this massive space to my advantage?

You could suspend a solid steel habitation cube from the ceiling. That would look epic as well as use up all of that space.

Build a stalactite fortress on the ceiling. Breed giant bats.

Build a fortress shaped like a giant bat on the ceiling. Breed stalactites.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

And build a supported-to-lever lot of single floor tiles, to rain death upon anything

Build a single support to hold up the entire dangling cube habitation. With multiple levers attached to it. On a map with [MISCHIEVOUS] critters.

Build an inverted ziggurat on the ceiling and sacrifice creatures on its "roof".  :D

Drill a hole in the ceiling that goes all the way to the first floor, and use it to pit caged goblins.

Fill it full of cast obsidian and carve out your fortress there.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

147 z levels. i usually use caverns as amusing ways to torment would-be invaders.

Hrm, what's the largest fall any known creature can survive on landing? Those roving kittens need a cushion.

i have no idea. 15 z levels kills pretty much anything AFAIK...

147 levels makes them explode very violently...

I haven't run into any large caverns, but one time I had to dig 62 z levels down before I even got to the first cavern.
