Community Art Thread - Good or bad.. Doesn't matter
« on: December 21, 2010, 10:04:09 am »

Couldn't find a random or generic art submit thread so I thought i'd start one, if there is one already let me know and I will close this.

Please could everyone try and make something. Even if you're very bad at art, or if it's done in MSpaint.. Just post it!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Here's mine.. I need to get better at drawing dem beards. :D

Well, there is The Engravers Guild, which is more for serious critique, and the Fan Art thread in GD. But I guess this is less specific than either of those, so it fills it's own niche.

I don't actually have anything meaningful to contribute.

Well as long as its not in the way i'll just keep filling it with doodles until some more people join in. :)

It's been ages since I last did any artwork, so this is mostly old works, and a few incomplete renderings.

The ship is apparently supposed to have some sort of fighter bays somewhere below the wings, or at least some sort of launching mechanism attached to the broad part of the wings. And outside the obvious, a lower bridge is missing from the bottomside. The craft is supposed to be comparable to the size of a battleship and capable of carrying a small wing of defensive fighters. Docking/landing zones are supposed to be through the large hatch below, and the flat spot behind the bulk above, and in front of the doorway below the upper bridge.

Note: I haven't had any official training in 3DSMax. This was mostly just winging it with a few tutorials that came with the program and taught the basics.

EDIT:
Mayhaps sometime, I can try to attempt a basic rendering of the Bloodfist (solid model) in a less blocky fashion (like you see in Minecraft or DF). But this time, with a more proper propeller set and such.

Would be awesome if someone can attempt to remake this site in DF. I tried, but those seaside forts are a pain to pull off. Especially considering this place is made up mostly of stone.

Funny enough, I based the form of this site off a chair. Actually, I used to make bases of all different settings throughout my house. Ceiling fans are giant starbases, beds and couches are colossal bases, floor tiles are city blocks, kitchen sinks and garbage cans are waste disposal facilities and etc.. I mean, you name it, I can find a way it can be converted from a mundane object/furniture and turn it into a badass facility. Hell, a recliner operates as a transforming base (from defense compound to fighter facility that launches ships from top and bottom (of the foot rest) via catapult systems like aircraft carriers use).

Probably the most elaborate use of this idea was turning my whole house into a sort of colony ship/colossal habitat/artificial geosphere. After eons of travel, and going nowhere, portions of these have split into their own factions; wars between districts (marked by their primary function (or who owns the room)) are made to rule the resources and control the distribution. Said wars have been known to last for generations. Yeah...

That would actually make for an interesting game/story. BTW, such ships/habitats are so freaking colossal, they use artificial suns, and carry their own atmospheres. Of course, terror attacks usually get carried about damaging/destroying air filter plants (which are literally filled with plants). Once those pocket eco-systems are taken out, down goes the farming industry for that sector as well as the fresh air supply, and just about anything connected to that as well (tossing in bio-diesel as well, down with a renewable fuel source). You can imagine that these things must operate like a utopia, or otherwise the entire colony/habitat will be compromised, and millions would die inside what would then become lifeless derelicts. Of course, in one campaign I thought up, one such ship a hero goes about trying to get by so he can escape after affording a trip out via merchant (of exotic goods) is of course named the "Exodus". With that kind of name, you can imagine the crap the citizens within must be dealing with on a daily basis.

Of course, these kinds of ships take up all sorts of forms. Basically, they really are just houses, except many many many many times bigger, and the household stuff is converted into some sort of necessary facility which fits their role best.

All this sky fortress talk got me motivated.  I love this sort of setting.

The caption shall be:  "I never should have bothered with the site finder..."

Yeah it's missing a huge ass shadow.. but ill add that in later maybe.

I actually have an image of a sky island I sketched out ages ago; after a good few years later, I ret-conned myself a way of explaining how such an island of that scale (Hawaii-sized) can float. Turns out it was a colossal megaweapon that is millennia old (and it's energy field/magic force field holds it up. Think Zeal, but taken to 11.), and after ages of not being used, it's power was put to more civil use, and land was gathered around it, formed a series of pocket-biomes atop, inside, and below it, and protruding structures were regarded as temples (though portions of the weapon itself), and the skeleton of the weapon was it's mass transit system internally. Because of being a megaweapon, it has a cloaking field that hides it from commoners, and the only way onto it is via airship or stargate. The waterfalls that go up into the island is filtered through the land, and also used to keep the island/weapon cool, and downward falls are the runoff. Alternatively, docks were setup near the upward falls to allow transit by ship, riding the upward current, and doing the same to get down. Of course, the ships to get up and down these currents would require wings of sorts to catch the updraft and also to gently glide down them as well.

Due to the island's colossal size, and all it's falls and etc. the natural balance of things in the regions it hovers around are so strange, mysterious disappearances and etc. are treated like the Bermuda and Devil's Triangle. Where and why else do you think these disappeared ships and aircraft end up where they are? Why else would compasses and etc. freak out? Why else would you see things that don't belong in the current time frame? Of course, the island would never (or at least seldom) go over land, due to how much damage it can cause by it's falls alone, as well, it wouldn't be able to collect any water while in-transit over land. A reason it would stay over the ocean(s).

Of course, I made this island for a Blue Mars kind of storyline, where the "Martians" are a sort of Origin race (Archaiean/Archetypes being their name), and it turns out we're a magic-less offshoot of them. Despite our lack of magic capability, we're still just as badass as these ancients are, because we found our way around not being able to force the will of nature. Though the magic these ancients used was just a more advanced way of applying math and such (symbols, runes, circles, triangles and etc. that you commonly see in magic is just simplified mathematical formulas to bend elements to your will; so to put it. We just lack the capacity to put the will into full-force) sans technological assistance (like forges, power plants, and such). So to put it, religion WAS a science for them. Few of their kind remained on our world at times to try and teach us their ways, but of course, especially during puritan times and such, we killed them before they could get their lessons across; and during the visitations (like the Roswell crash and such), again, we killed them, but took their technology and learned lots, but still haven't figured out their willful-manipulation techniques. Of course, Mankind will find a way around that; and that we do.

I'll see if I can pull up an image of it (the island) some time. I really wanted to make a 3D rendering of it, but there's just far too much detail to toss in to make it look good. I mean, it has at least 15 cities on and in it, top and bottom total (about 7 atop, 1-3 internal, and 2-5 on the bottomside; radiating from spires of the original megaweapon itself that's still exposed and not covered by land mass).

Of course, in this story as well, our main character eventually ends up living on it, especially as a form of safehouse or a home where nobody can find him that he can retire to as well, or something; considering he's more of a space pirate and such in the storyline. I've had these kinds of ideas floating about and evolving for over a decade. Of course, a bit of early exposure, and not my best work on display at the time (it was a rush job for a class assignment that was exposed as a sample), kinda discouraged me from working on it for a good amount of time. Oh my goodness, you shouldv'e seen the comments I was lobbed with. My only real response to it was replying with the MST3k mantra. or simply "Shut up and enjoy it.". That didn't go over too well with the people I was responding to (then again, they were just a bunch of unimaginative trolls. Even their insults lacked creativity. I was insulted by the insults because they lacked insult quality.), so I had to get rid of as much of it as I could and just work on all this in private. Actually, I just let it fade into obscurity until it felt right to bring it out to light again.

EDIT:
Re-reading all that, now I have a craving for some double-downs maaaaaan.

I was insulted by the insults because they lacked insult quality.

This details about 80% of forum/community's on the internet and it has really made me loathe the mindset of todays people.

It seems you have many creative ideas, it would be a waste if they were to fade into the abyss.

I always believed in the crystal core method of an islands floating ability, I have no idea why maybe its because of Laputa:castle in the sky and my childhood memories with Lego.  I Made a diamond shape out of the brightest color lego I could, then put it in the centre of this giant bush plant I had in the house. Then I proceeded to fill the middle exterior of the plant with homes, factories, boardwalk road links and people.  It was my greatest achievement until my brother discovered he can be an ass.

Back to working on my next doodle..

Funny you mentioned the crystal core idea, because my island originally had that as an idea, and all the other temples/spires had smaller crystals to support their ends to keep stability of the island. The energy/light emitted got so bright that they could be seen for miles (of course, projected as columns of light that span outward to space; oddly, these are cloaked as well.); furthermore, each temple/spire had an elemental purpose/niche they fill. What was neat that I included in my colored illustration as well is a nega-light beam (essentially it's just a negative filter used, but the effect turned out neat nonetheless).

FAKE-EDIT:
Odd, I can't seem to find the picture. Not quite in the mood to recolor that again. I mean, it would end up better next time around, but still.

Best place I could find to share this.  Made it a couple years ago.  The cacodemon itself I made over the course of a couple months.  Christmas of 2008, I threw the hat on in about 5 minutes just for fun.

Wow that brings back firebally memories.  I dabbled a little bit in 3d rendering about 5 years ago but I got terribly impatient with it and went back to paper.  I managed to make a model of running bear with a silly winter hat  and I thought i did an all right job for a first attempt in blender.

Curse my memory!!! I can never picture Cacodemons the same way ever again thanks to having made this and used it so many times! Everytime I look at one, I can only imagine them as a delicacy.

Kinda bumping this thread to sort-of say that I might make being creative again a New Year's Resolution. So in due time, I might show some more of my old stuff, and maybe take requests as I oil up the gears in my head (and drawing hand). Some art may end up being re-hashes or re-boots of old works, others more original. I'll even try to learn more about 3D programs (also if anyone's willing to tutor me more about the inner workings of some programs, especially to get a more desired effect) to at least render some (more) models of them.

Hell, maybe I'll even try to tell a bit more about the universe some of these designs share through the art. I'm not promising quality, but at least I'll be making things again. Been years, so my skills may be a bit rusty.

If possible, if anyone would be interested in it as well, provided an idea is good enough to tinker with, we can try to implement it into a game or something (Garry's Mod would be a good sandbox to toss it in). Of course, my coding sucks, and I'm not too experienced at modeling, at least, in making it game-friendly or texturing and such.

If requesting work from me, I'll tell you what I'm best at:
Landscapes, machinery, weapons, fine-detail art (more as decor for these things; may take longer, like a baroque lightning pistol I once designed.), Figure drawing is a challenge (but thanks to attending a couple art classes, it's just that I need a model to work off of; anime/manga-style is more like a trick-shot. It's not too hard, it just takes awhile to get it right.). If anything, realism and realistic designing/artistic engineering (again, machines and landscapes) are more my forte. And just about my average for putting time into works approx. 3-4 hours at best. At least after letting my ability sit still for awhile and forget "the same style" for a bit, I should develop new methods and such for getting work done; hopefully more efficient and with better quality.
