Not too sure what I did here...
« on: December 11, 2006, 11:05:00 pm »

While trying to find the moutain river, I attempted to block off any possible chances of my entire fort from flooding. I used floodgates for this (I wasn't sure whether doors would stop water very well).

Unfortunately, while placing one of the floodgates, one of the dwarves couldn't seem to go get it, seeing as how he was on the other side of where the stockpiles were. Needless to say, it kept repeating that he cancelled the building (see the screenshots).

Out of curiosity, is there anyway to cancel a building before it is created? And will he eventually stop repeating the message, or should i just start anew?

You can cancel a building using either (q) or (t) depending on the building, then (x).

What's blocking the path isn't the floodgate you're building, it's the one thats already built. You can remove it using the same method. Closed floodgates aren't passable - they need to be connected to a lever and opened first.

Doors will work fine for stopping floods, as long as they're not stuck open by having a stone or something dropped in them.

not entirely sure if it's been fixed.. but it used to be (many versions ago)... if you cancelled a planned floodgate.. you can't build anything (well.. not floodgates or channels anyway) in that square either...

btw.. why are you building a floodgate next to a wall that's to be dug?

I was trying to dig him out, but it didn't seem to take. I might as well start over, it's not like I was very far into the game anyhow.

You need to dig out around the OTHER floodgate, as that one hasn't been built yet.  And won't be because the building dwarf can't find a path to it.
