Get to the source of the gerbils using flight. Failing that, go check up on the goblins.
What he said. And see if there's any other non-gerbil stuff around that catches the eye.

Ugh. Because of recent events, I'm putting this on hiatus until further notice. When possible, I'll return and start it back up again.

Ah, sure. This story was kind of losing its stride anyway, stumbling along. Better for you to deal with whatever's up, and for us all to start missing this thread, and then continue it fully inspired again.

"Where are you all going?" you demand of the gerbils.
Millions speaking as one, they reply: "To the sea!"
"Why?"
Silence. Looking around, you see a mountain in the distance, as well as what appears to be a small city at its base. The gerbils continue their incessant rush toward the sea.
Acting on impulse, you try to stomp a few of them, but they dodge around your feet.
Thoroughly bored of this, you hover into the air and fly toward the city. As the grassy landscape passes by, you see the end of the gerbil horde running off.

The city, though small in size, shines brightly. The sunlight glints off of the polished limestone walls of the buildings, and dances through the stained glass windows. Walking along the streets and taking in the sights, you see your two goblin captives doing something with a fountain.
"Hey!" you holler, waving. In an instant, you are within conversation distance. "How did you know that the sun in the tiger's pen was fake?"

"It gave no warmth," the shaman replies.

"That's all?"

"Yup," says the commander.

You look around once more. "Did you two build all this?"

"Yup. What else would we do?"

You hadn't thought of that.

Alrighty. It's not a lot, but it's a start. We are in the land of dreams and infinite possibilities! Suggestions?

Gosh I do love ellipses, don't I?

"So... What do you two think?"

"Think of what?" they ask in unison.

"Recent events. How I handled those fools, of Thikutlitast the ghost, all of the things that have transpired."

"I woulda fought 'em myself," says the commander. "They all looked like pansies to me."

"I suggest you don't listen to that bracelet," the shaman states matter-of-factly. "He's old. You should also wake up. It's not safe on these steps."

Oh yeah... you passed out on some stairs.

"Don' worry, we've been listenin'. There's no danger near us."

You try to bring to mind how far you've traveled, but realize that you haven't been keeping track. Oops. You then try to bring to mind all of the tall mountains on the island. You really wish that you had payed attention in geography. Okay... There's a mountain range north of the university. You recall seeing it in the distance a few times. Errr.... Wait. How deep is this lab? How far down are you? You remember falling a long way then hitting your head... Well, that's not helpful. Hm.

"World," you say. "How long until I'm rested enough to continue up the stairs?"

"A short while longer."

Alright. Some time to think. An idea!

"Thikutlitast!" you bellow. "Get in here!"

The pink apparition shimmers into being in front of you. He's much more defined than you remember him being. The shaman shakes his head and turns back to his fountain.

"Eh?" Thikutlitast asks.

"Where exactly are we in relation to the city?"

He shimmers for a moment. "Close, close. No need to shout. Just a stroll to the north, really."

"Are we under a mountain?"

He shimmers again. "I guess you humans would call it a mountain. Nothing like we had before. Only about 2,500 dwarves tall."

Dwarves? You look at Thikutlitast. He's about four feet tall. Sooo... 10,000 feet! Yeah, it's what you feared. You're in the mountain range north of the city. You sigh deeply.

I love copying suggestions, it takes all the difficulty out of creating suggestions with the added bonus of meaning I can still claim to have made a contribution.

"Sooo," you begin, but are cut off.

"Just go up the stairs some. None of the pansies will follow." Thikutlitast says this and leaves. Poof!

"Be cautious. He can't be trusted." The shaman doesn't look at you as he says this.

You look over at the commander, but she just shrugs and returns to placing blocks.

Assuming you'll know if you're about to wake up, you decide to explore your surroundings a bit more. You fly out of the city, but there's very little of interest. Some hills, lots of grass, a few clouds, but not a lot. "Well," you say to yourself, "we can't have that."
To start off, you conjure some black storm clouds. Painful, pelting rain and lightning aplenty swirl around, crashing and exploding. Small fires burst into life, only to be struck down mere moments after. On a whim, you summon a small horde of fluffy wamblers and laugh as you watch dozens of them burst into confetti with precision lightning strikes. A few of them gather at your feet and seem to be imploring you to spare them. They bow down by your shoes in absolute terror. You can't help but let out a laugh, fell and terrible.
You take perverse joy in crushing them like ants, leaving stains of pudge and fur behind.
Satisfied, momentarily, you ponder other ways to improve the scenery...

Don't feel obligated to stick with the evil if you don't want to. Seriously, nothing here is impossible (though if you suggest that we create a time paradox, keep in mind that we won't actually be traveling through time). Be good! Be evil! Be True Neutral! Use thine imaginations!

Make a volcano in your dream-land. Everyone loves mountains that occasionally spew out ash and molten rock, killing everything in the area. They're so good for agriculture!

For those wondering at the slow start, well, let's just say I'm coking up some ideas for later. Also, Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes. You dramatically raise one arm and draw a mountain from the earth. Belching smoke and fire, it coats all the land in ash. Rivulets of blackened water run down your face. A terrible hail of pumice and other rock scores the ground around you. The rain and fire clash, and the torrents of lava begin spewing forth from the caldera. The molten rock gushes down the mountainside, with fingers of flame clutching at everything near.
Next you draw lines in the sky, and at your command the storm sends bolts of electricity arcing across these lines. You time the strikes perfectly, and compose a symphony of explosive force. Guitars wail in the background.
You decide that you've done enough, for now, and leave the dreamscape to its own devices. You feel ready to wake up.

You awaken in the seemingly infinite stairwell and stretch your arms. Ouch! You back hurts like hell. Maybe sleeping on this hard metal landing wasn't the best of ideas. You wobble to your feet and begin the endless march once more.
After uncountable flights and what feels like several hours, you sit down and look up.
"Uhg," is all you can manage when you discover that the entrance isn't any closer than it was before. You look instead to the next landing. Wait, what's that? A lift! Awesome! You start slogging up the last two cliff-like flights of stairs, and take one final rest before getting on. You take a drink, but realize that you're almost out of water. You still have about one and a half... Plump helmets were they? Whatever, they aren't very appetizing anyway.
After a few minutes, you step onto the lift and poke at the controls. It shudders to life and moves up, going faster and faster until it starts getting difficult to stand. You sincerely hope it will be able to slow down in time. The wind whooshes past your ears and whistles through the holes in the steel grate floor. You notice a handle in the center of the floor, and instinctively grab hold with both hands. As soon as you do, the air is filled with the unholy keening of the elevator's brakes. Inertia reverses gravity for a moment, and you fly upwards. Your arms just barely remain in their sockets until you've slowed enough to land. Despite the screaming pain, you focus enough to heal some of the muscle rips in your shoulders before blacking out.

A while later, you return to the land of the living. Everything achesssss..... you think to yourself. You focus your aura once more and finish up the healing process. Something tells you that the sun's up, so you lurch to a sitting position. You close your eyes-a symbolic gesture, really; there's not enough light to see very far, and you lost the lamp a while back. You scan the local area with your mind, see no signs of life. You look further, and note that the sun is indeed up. It's about noon. Nothing else catches your attention.
With that business taken care of, you look around as best you can with your eyes, but to no avail. You look up once more, but don't see the light that you had been striving for. You then remember that you little magical knife buddy Fortresssparks emits light. At that moment it's in your hand, shining brightly.
You are on a platform, and there appears to be a door across from you. Behind you is the lift o' doom, and to your left is a descending staircase. On your right there is a small railing, then blackness.

> Prepare for anything nasty; keep Fortresssparks into a shape fit for fighting in close quarters. A shortsword, long dagger or small axe should do.

You ready Fortresssparks and step towards the door. You are aware of every creek of the leather of your boots, every muted clang your feet make on the metal platform. You place you hand on the door's handle and turn it slowly. You push the door outward cautiously, but it is then ripped from your hands by a bitingly cold wind!
Momentarily blinded, you cover your ears from the roaring wind and kneel down. You hug your cloak tighter around yourself and take a look outside. In the distance there is the city, still crumbled from the quake. Several of the buildings look to be under construction, though. You wonder how long you've been under the earth.
In your more immediate surroundings, you are on what seems like the tallest mountain in the range, but there is a path leading down to your right. The wind is screaming past, and threatens to push you off the edge, which is only five feet away from the cliff that borders the path. To your left there is only a sheer drop a few feet away.

Taking the obvious choice, you turn right and make your way down the path. It's slippery and treacherous until you reach an intersection.
One path leads to a bridge. A concrete span that goes across a gorge. It's covered in a thin sheet of ice and has no railings.
The other is a crumbled but still usable slope leading down the mountainside.

We can have Fortresssparks form a sheet with spikes on the bottom, to grip into the ice. Stretching it enough to be any use trying to prevent a road from crumbling, however, is probably... *sunglass'd* stretching it. YEEEAAAAH.

So I say we go over the ice, making Fort cover a bit, walking over it, and making Fort move the part we just stepped off to be in front of us again.

Or we could go the easier route and just remove the ice with what's likely the greatest ice pick in the world. Just tap it around in front like a blind person with cane, and then if we actually manage to slip, it will imbed into the concrete to hold us steady.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.
