"Tell me about the surroundings."
"The stinking crevice is a short walk from here. It is home to Dandy Candyluck, the lost adventurer."
I see what you did there.

And ask if there's any chance of getting back to the surface. Subtly. If we're blunt about it, I doubt she'll coöperate.

You crawl out of the bed and get to your feet. You look around the hospital room and see that there are thirty total beds. A few of them have dark red stains on the sheets.
"So," you begin. "How often does your hospital see patients?"
"Every time a nasty swarm of creatures comes along." She replies. "Especially the tougher forgotten beasts. Some of them cause horrible syndromes that kill off large parts of the population."
"That sounds... awful." You say with genuine emotion in your voice.
"Eh," she shrugs her shoulders. "It happens."
"Right..." Does she even care? "Anyway, why did you build a city over a giant sea of magma?"
She gives you a shocked look. "Where else would we build it?"
"Why not on the shores, or away from the  heat?"
She suddenly explodes with laughter, doubling over and disturbing the strange crawling things that hide under the beds. You stand, unamused, until she catches herself and stops.
She clears her throat and continues. "Well, for one thing all of the nasty monsters that love to kill dwarves live on the land, and the magma drives most of them away. Sure, there are a few accidents involving mislabeled levers and floods, but ultimately more lives are saved by being here than are lost."
"Why not live on the surface?" You say. "It has no forgotten beasts, and most of the creatures don't have poisons."
She glances at you with burning eyes. "Were banished from the surface by your kind. May have forgotten, but us dwarves have long memories. Only tolerate you to prevent an all-out war." She growls at you. Her use of personal pronouns seems to diminish severely when she's angry.

Calm her down. Ask more about their history, what the city is working on right now, what the entity is, and if she has heard of Toady One.

Check the dwarf's aura; you felt one very large thing down here, not a large bunch of small things. Regardless, say hello directly to the very large thing.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Crap, you think, I should change the subject.
"Uh, what sort of projects are you working on right now?" you blurt out hastily.

She seems to relax. "Have you seen those large blue columns in the distance?" she asks. You nod your head. "Made of the ore for a metal called adamantine. It's the single greatest metal in our universe."

"That seems like a fairly small scale project," you say.

"It is, but it requires a great deal of planning to avoid digging too deep."

"Digging too deep? What happens if you do that?"

"We don't know. All accounts of it happening are told by terrified refugees who often become melancholy and jump off of the bridge." She says this with a perfectly even voice, as if she were discussing the weather. It's more than a little worrying.

"And what keeps you from digging too deep?" you ask.

"Caution, and stopping the project whenever anything bad happens. Really, it progresses very slowly, but no one wants to become yet another fortress eliminated by digging too deep."

"Would it be possible for me to get some of this metal?" If I could, you think to yourself, then I can sell it and live comfortably without that damn coffee job.

"Unless you have several hundred kilograms of platinum on you, don't bother. It is extremely rare, and almost completely impossible to afford. That's why the mayor is the only one who orders its use in anything, it's just too expensive for private citizens to own." She looks a little sad at this. Maybe she really likes it? "Well, I have to go. You are free to leave the city as you please. Also, before I forget-" she takes a backpack off of her shoulders and hands it to you, "-you'll need this."

You inspect the contents. There is a skin of water, some purple mushrooms that you assume are food, a rope, and a spear and knife made of copper.

"If you want to return to the surface, ask one of the rangers. They know the area better than anyone, and will get you back home. For a fee."

She leaves, turning around the corner and down the hall.
You sit on the bed and look for auras. You can feel some strange things in the distance, but you see no dwarves. You can't seem to find them anywhere, no matter how hard you concentrate. You stand up and leave the hospital, determined to find a dwarven aura.
You eventually come upon what appears to be a dining hall, and try to see the auras of the revelers inside. Nothing. Not a single one of them has an aura. Very strange.
You look around for a ranger, but don't see any. You aren't quite sure what you could use to tell the difference between them and any other dwarf, but you look anyway. Deciding to take the obvious route, you ask someone.
You walk up to a dwarf with a red armband, and ask him if there are any rangers around. He looks at you strangely, but points toward a dwarf with a crossbow and green armband that you swear wasn't there before.
"Do you speak--" you begin, but he cuts you off.
"Yeah I speek th' damn langage. Whad'ya want?"
"Uh, could you lead--"
"Leed'ya ta th'surface? That'l cost ya."

Flee to the wilderness. You cannot trust these soulless monstrosities. Find your own way back to the surface.

Hm. No auras? Hoshit. I'm not sure where you're going with this, but the only time I've read about that is when someone's about to die. When a whole fort's about to die, that's not good. NOT GOOD. Of course, I could be wrong.

We won't get out without help anyway. Think of a way to make money, and check your own aura just in case.

We can't see our own aura, remember? It's like trying to look at your own face without a mirror.

Yeah, perhaps we could do some kind of job. Though, why would we be unable to see our own aura? Could just look at our own fingers, right? If there's glowy cloudy stuff around them, we have one. If there isn't, we don't have one.

Sorry for the massive delay, but I'm currently several hundred miles away from my usual computer. It's been hard to get to a reliable internet signal here, but I'll get back to normal around the 19th-20th. For the moment, I have enough time to make an update.

"Er, actually, I need some money."
He levels his crossbow at your chest. "Ain't gunna give ya my hard earned coppers. Go bum som'un else."
You raise your arms and back off. He lowers his weapon and strikes up a conversation with the hunter next to him.
You look around helplessly. None of the dwarves seem to care about the only human in the room. However, you were given the backpack full of supplies.
It occurs to you that the dwarves not having auras is strange, and you wonder what it means. You look at your hand, and see that your aura is incredibly bright, almost blinding your third eye. You double check the dwarves, but still see no auras. Hm.
You start to wander around the dining hall, and notice that new arrivals bring their food with them. You had expected to see some sort of lunch counter or something. You also notice that the purple mushrooms that some dwarves eat have massive seeds in them. Wait, if it's a fungus, then those are spores. Weird.
An idea pops into your head. You walk over to the nearest dwarf and ask where the manager is. She points to a dwarf on the other side of the hall, wearing flowing purple robes and carrying a stick.
You walk over and begin to say something.
"Unless you have a job request, you have no business with the manager," says a guard in a completely black outfit and shining mask.
"Uh, I need a job, yes." you say.
"Good." He disappears completely.
You walk up and address the manager. "Uh, I need a job."
He glances at you then hands you a map with markings on it. "Take the bin at the first marking to the stockpile at the second."
"Okay." You jog off. Using the map, you find that the bin in question is piled under thirty  dwarves all trying to take away various objects from a workshop. You reach in and slowly drag the empty bin from under the writhing mass of dwarves. You pick it up, marveling at the lightness of it. It weighs almost nothing, despite being as large as your torso. You place in the stockpile, and as soon as you do, another dwarf charges in and puts a bone figurine inside. You look at your map, but the markings have changed.
