Be careful while exploring. This really is suspicious, especially the fact that they didn't mention it in the news or anything.. most likely trying to hide it. It's probably full of things that aren't in the rest of this world. Especially little bearded dorfmen, but we don't know that.

Maybe pick up a weapon?

You step back, put the lamp gently on the muddy ground, and sprint at the tree-shroom. You jump and do a flying tackle, scoring a direct hit on the trunk. It flops over into the mud and the giant cap rolls away into the blackness. You are left sprawling in the  muck next to a treeshroom log. Sitting up, you wipe the grime from your eyes and look around to make sure that nothing is sneaking up on you. You scan with your mind as well, and there is nothing besides the fungi, bugs, and miles-distant abomination. Wait.

You do a short scan, see a regular monster, and can detect the Lovecraftian horror even though it's at least three miles away. You must have gotten really good at this as you practiced throughout your journey so far.

You have a log. Tackle another treeshroom, turn one log into a carpenter's workshop and use it to turn the other into a training axe to defend yourself with and cut down other treeshrooms more easily. Then build a fort.

*cough*
Investigate the monster.

I think you may have misunderstood my wording, but tangents are always fun. I'll edit in this particular one.

You look with your eyes for the strange monster you sensed, but it's too dark to see into the distance. You listen, and hear a strange croaking sound. It stomps its way toward your light, and you see it in all of its horiffic glory.
An enormous starling twisted into human form! Its sparse feathers are mauve! It belches and croaks! Beware its taste for warm blood!

Find a fluffly rambler and throw it at it.

Ponder the eerie similarity this scenario has to an old indie game you used to play, then attack the starlingman.

A starling is a sparrow?
Anyway.. we're untrained, unarmed, unarmored and completely new to any kind of fighting, unless that's part of our memory I missed. There is a better course of action, than trying to fight it...

You're right, we should spend several years pumping magma up from the mantle just to create an overly eleborate trap in which to kill it before sacrificing ourselves to lure it into the trap...

You guys are joking, right? It's a forgotten beas and you suggest that we attack it head on?

DF style, of course, what did you excpect? This is the Bay12 Forums, when we see monsters our first thought is to throw something soft and fluffy at it, logic and sensible tactics never come into our minds.

But... If you insist... Skip away while singing 'The Final Countdown'. For no reason. Other than the FB.

Seriously. Here's our plan:

1: We loudly exclaim "Fuck this shit!"
2: We haul our sorry asses back to town.
3: If it's late, sleep. When it's day, go to town and buy a gun and some ammo if such things are acceptable in this society.
4: Try this whole expedition thing again.

If guns are unavailable, we need to think about getting around it, or mindtricking it to death.
