Back away slowly, then chat up the griller.

This guy is laying on the creepy thick, so you start to walk away. Just as you start to turn, however, he smiled a large, toothy, grin that did nothing to alleviate the frightening aura he gave off.
You start to walk away, but he jumps up and starts laughing.

He appears next to you and wraps his arm around your shoulder.
"You're a funny one!" He said with alarming glee. "I like you! Lets be friends! What's your name?"
"Uuuhhh... D- Davis-er David." Agh! Personal space! Personal space!
"DDaviserDavid? That's weird!"
"N-No, it's just David." CREEPY! CREEPY! ESCAPE!
"Oh." He seemed to deflate. "That's boring. Oh well, I'm Robert."

Acquire strategic partnership: Mutual Acquaintance with Robert Robertson. Take newly acquired Mutual Acquaintance to speak with the GRILLER.

Robert looks like he was about to say something else, but then he disappeared.
Looking around, you notice that he is cracking open his book again by the box of logs. What?

Further observation tells you that the grill master and one of the girls near the fire are both approaching you. They appear to be siblings, but you shouldn't make assumptions based on nothing.

The griller speaks first.
"Is Robert bothering you?" Disdain flashed through his eyes when he spoke the name. Are they on bad terms?
The grill-sister walks up behind her maybe-brother, but says nothing.

Inform them regretfully that the exchange of word stuffs was caused by our brain. Do not inform them of our brain's split personalities.

"Err," You try to come up with an answer. "I don't think so, I just wanted to talk to someone."
"I wouldn't suggest doing that." Said the grill-sister.
"Yeah, it's bad for your sanity." The griller confirmed.
"Okay, what are your names?"
"I'm Richard," said the griller, "and this is my cousin Emily."
Emily gives you a sweet smile.

"Soo.." You aren't sure how to ask. "Do either of you... recognize me?"
Once again, Richard gives you a strange look.
"I think I saw you on campus a few times." Said Emily. Much more helpful.
"Er... Which campus?" You query, trying to recover the memories.
"The main one?" She looks at you strangely. "There's only one college in the city."
"Right..." This whole 'getting information inconspicuously' thing isn't easy.

Huh... If this silence continues, it will become too awkward to speak! But... What to say?

Nonchalantly swagger off to the parking lot in search of our CAR. Say goodbye to our Mutual Acquaintances to make the swagger less awkward.

"Well, thanks for the food," you say "but I really must be-"
"OH no," exclaims Richard. "you can't dine and dash, this ain't a soup kitchen. You ate our food, you have to help us keep the fire up until midnight."
"He's right," said Emily, though in a much nicer tone. "We lugged this stuff all the way across the island for tonight. We can't just be giving food away."
"But I- wait, Island? Aren't we somewhere in the US?" You ask, genuinely surprised.
"Are you on something?" said the ever-skeptical Richard. "We're on Nepenthe!* An island in the middle of the Pacific! How can you not know that? How the hell did you even get here?"
"That's what I want to know." You say under your breath.

*Nepenthe, as far as I know, is not a real place. The name means 'forgetful' in Greek (according to trustworthy sources) and I used it to name an island nation I had to create for a school project once. I will be using my created nation as the setting, and details will have to be gleaned from the story.

Also, should we try to run, or help them despite the... fire...

So long as we can stay a good 20ft away from the fire, we should be fine. Help the Mutual Acquaintances.

"Okay, I'll help," You say, "How long until midnight?"
"Only a few hours." they both say in unison.
"Right," damn nonspecific youngsters. "What do I have to do, then?"
Richard looked over at the fire, then pointed at a corner.
"See that corner there?" He asked. "You need to bring over a few of the longer logs and make sure that it doesn't collapse. The frame needs to keep that shape, otherwise the fire will die before midnight."

You walk over to the box of logs and try to get two of the longer ones out. Robert just leers at you with his freaky, overly wide smile.
Disentangling the logs from one another forces you to stand near Robert for a little too long, and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. You can feel his eyes looking through you.

Once the logs were out of the box and into your arms, you go back to Richard and Emily. Emily looks like she has been laughing, and Richard has just the smallest indication of a smile on his face.
You take this in stride and swagger toward the fire, hell bent on not showing any sign of fear. All the people around the fire seem fairly happy to see you, though it probably has something to do with you helping to keep it burning.

Unless you guys are feeling creative, we have two immediately obvious options here: Throw the logs in from a distance and risk bringing down the entire bonfire structure, or get closer and set them up carefully and risk being burnt.

I should remind you that we have no idea how they will react if you mess up, and both of these options involve using random.org, which is known to be randomly cruel. Or kind. Don't count on either.

Let's rid ourselves of this phobia in one fell swoop. Get up close and personal with this accursed fire.

Let's be honest. Inform Richard that we have a secret fear of fire and that we feel that it would make others think us weak if they knew. Ask if there could possibly be any other way to help. He doesn't seem to know us and he does seem to be the host, or one of them at least. After wards go talk to Emily and tell her that you have a massive hangover and you can't think much without getting a headache. Ask her about everything she knows about you and who you would usually hang out with. Ask Emily if she remembers what classes you went to at the campus, and if there were any tests going on a day or so ago.
