Beasts of burden
« on: December 20, 2010, 07:35:33 pm »

We can already train dogs and other animals for war and hunting, so why not other things? Currently pets simply shadow their masters, and sometimes take up the fight with them, usually if they're trained for battle. I think animal training can be expanded.
  • Expand the kennel tasks to allow for other types of training.
  • Animals can learn one action at a time, such as hauling or tilling(fertilizing fields).
  • Certain types of animals can be suited for different tasks: elephants can knock over trees, oxen can operate screw pumps, giant moles can dig(mine).
  • Being animals, they probably couldn't be managed well and be very dependent on animal trainers.
  • I don't know if we'll get into the subject of dorf steeds. Maybe another thread.

I'm pretty sure Beast of Burdens are on the current dev list, split between adventure mode ownership and sites, as well as improved hauling.

One thing that should definitely be in there is that animals should mostly require a master to supervise them.

I was thinking primarily repetitive tasks that could be done by animals unsupervised. An animal caretaker may have to supply food and water to the animal, but otherwise this would be an autonomous process (until the animal drops dead of exhaustion or something).

It could also be a handy third power source.

I'd imagine seeing Hauling and Animal power.

Would be nice to have small animals (rabbits and smaller) that mature into adults in less than a year. Currently 1 year is the minimum child stage length.

Train the chimps and macaques to carry the damn socks to the sock pile. And the cats can carry little pink socks.
