What self-limits do you use?
« on: December 20, 2010, 04:24:38 pm »

What limitations (if any) do you put on yourself when playing DF? Lets face it once you get the hang of things DF isn't really that terribly hard a game, you can wall yourself in and live on your own supplies for nearly forever, the caverns make magma and water plentiful and if done smart with little or no real risk, and a prepared military can usually hold out against a siege unless you are caught off guard.

So.. To make things more 'fun', what do you do? These can either be things you always (or nearly always) do, things you do sometimes or things you are thinking of doing.

Things I do always are:

-I never use drawbridges (aside from the occasional atom smasher for junk).  They are impossible for nearly all monsters to get around making your fort nearly impossible to get into for enemies, the only thing I use for doors are doors (duh) and floodgates, that way they are vulnerable to building destroyers, I use walls and things too of course but there is always at least one entrance (my primary entrance, meaning if I want caravans to get in its gotta be at least three wide) to my fort that is only blocked by a door or floodgate.  I use bridges too but only retractable.

-I don't use danger rooms, they just work too well with nearly no real risk to them and create super soldiers in no time, takes away too much challenge.

Some things I am considering doing:

-Limit my armor options, like only allow myself to use up to iron, or even copper armor, instead of steel.  Or perhaps have a haven/hell option where I can only use leather/bone or adamant armor.

-No cage traps; nothing, to me, is more anticlimactic then seeing the flavor text about a horrific monster of the ages, perhaps a giantess, or cyclopes, only to have it wander into the nearest cage trap and get caught.  Normally I'd say I could use them for hunting creatures for food but one could make it even harder by disallowing that as that means no breeding animals you don't start with or buy.

So, what are yours?

I'm thinking of trying no dining room next cause I've never seen a tantrum spiral.

I don't quantem stock pile anything, nor do I atom smash. My fortresses tend to be a sub-atomic physics free zone.

1. No stonefall or weapon traps
2. Cage traps set up in the 1st year only
3. No surface magma
4. No flux on the embark viewer (although I tend to end up finding some anyway, I just have to dig for it)
5. No farmer on embark
6. No rule 6
7. No danger rooms
8. No atom smashers (1 quantum stockpile of stone ok provided its outside the fort proper)

No intentional atom smashing. No intentional quantum artifact. Little to no fiddling with stockpiles; if all barrels are used for meat and my booze production is blocked, must produce less food or more barrels. No replacing nobles just because they're annoying (but devising a way to cause an unfortunate accident is fair game). No switching off invasions of temperature just for megaprojects, for it is wussy. Useless, exceeding migrants shall be dealt with only after officially joining dwarven society, so no automatized migrant-smashing/drowning/killing device. Bedrooms are individual and at least 2x3.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

None!

I play DF to screw around, not for challenge.

That being said, I just don't do things like atom smashing, I seem to do fine in my 151 dwarf fort with 45 fps.

Heh, its funny that we have one person who limits their defense to traps only and one who limits it to soldiers only..

Large creature + [TRAPAVOID] + [FLIER] + [NOBREATHE] + [FIRESUPERIMMUNE] would make traps basicaly useless. We should tottaly get a mega beast like that.

I play a lot of one challenge forts.  a partial list:

No farm (must hunt, gather, and trade for food and booze)
Only farm (can't hunt, trade, or gather)
No militia
No traps
No mining
No lumber (what are ye, an Elf?)
1 Dwarf, 10 kittens, Dwarven Ale, Final Destination.

What is 'final destination' (aside from a mediocre horror flick).

A 4chan meme if I recall.  It's referring to Super Smash Brothers "pros" who demand to play on a small, flat stage with no havocs, no items, just you and your opponent.

I always hated Final Destination.  So boring. :\

PS edit:  And here I decided to be nice and type it out...

Basicaly it means there is nothing there, and as such it comes down to 'skill' over luck and understanding, and for a game like DF it is rather impossible.
