Militia wont attack prisoners
« on: December 20, 2010, 09:49:36 am »

So yea, i caught a bunch of snatchers lately and i wanted to train my marksdorf a little, so i bring them to the room with fortifications, linked cages to a lever, station my dorf near those fortifications and then "PULL THE LEVER!" and nothing happened. Used the kill command on them - nothing happened again. My dorf is just standing and looking at them. Then i bring my swordsdorf and opened the door with kill command activated and those goblins just rushed to my entrance just to be caught again in the very same cage traps. Could you advise me on what am i doing wrong? And yea? i searched the forum and cant find anything usefull, i`m playin 31.16 btw.
Thanks!

Marksdwarves (and any other ranged attackers) will only attack if they can path to the target. Decaged goblins will always rush to the exit without a lot of fighting back.

So, I can't put them on a wall? You ruined everything.

Well when i opened the door the marksdorf was near and he still didnt shoot. Or you mean if i close my dorf with uncaged goblins in one room he will eventually attack them?

And how do you mean they dont shoot through the fortification unless they have a walking path? Whats the point of them then? Its like i carve a fortification to shoot enemy but i must have my door opened?

I didn't have problems with using prisoners as target practice. I didn't use cages but instead made the room a pit by channeling a hole in the roof and putting a hatch on it then pitting in the prisoners from above (be careful thieves can escape the pit process usually).
The kill command rarely works by the way try stationing your marksdwarfs as close to the fortification as possible and examine them if they actually have arrows in their quivers as sometimes they wont pick up ammo.
For execution by melee i usually build the cages in a room with a door and lock the soldiers in with the prisoners, that usually works :>

Thanks! And i tryied stationing, didnt work either. Dorf was standing right next to a wall and looking at goblin about 3-4 tiles away. So silly. Gonna try and lock some dorfs now, they must proove if they are usefull!

Are you sure the marksdwarves actually had quivers and bolts at the time?  Their their individual inventories -- open the quivers (if they have them) and make sure they have bolts inside.

Hes a hunter and i`m pretty sure he has bolts since i got a message that hes out of ammunition a minute before i wanted to shoot those suckers. After that i was closely watching him going to my ammo stocks. And then i station him near those goblins wich he wont shoot nomatter what. I even tryed to deactivate him from militia when he was standing near fortification, he still didnt shoot

Check anyway. Go v-i with the cursor on him.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

You might want to make sure that;
A) They have been assigned bolts in the military menu under the appropriate heading
B) That the relevant ammunition types are available. Assigning them wooden bolts doesn't do jack if you don't have wooden bolts, yeah?

I also noticed that you say the dorf is also a Hunter? Remember this- Hunters and Marksdwarfs are assigned ammunition separately under the Military screen. As a civilian Hunter, Urist McHunter might have bolts assigned to him. When he puts on his military cap and is Urist McMarksdwarf, he might not. Double check your military equipment screen.
