I would suggest removing all the up ramps from the immediate area outside so that the only ramps are further to the east where the ravine is the narrowest. Makes trapping the area for protection easier and z-levels always confuse me a bit when I get ambushed.

Water can flow diagonally, so you need to put the floodgate on tile to the right.

For that, you have to assign them to squads, from the [m]ilitary screen. Then, you can order them around from the {s}quads menu.

Also remember that military squads need barracks to train in and weapons to use. Making a barracks is pretty easy after you've made a squad. (Try to make squad numbers proportionate to your population - too many and you can't get labor done. Also keep your squads small at first, 5 or less. Multiple small squads are excellent- they train faster and you can split your military to cover several points at once, etc.)
Dig out a room.
Put in a few beds, a cabinet, chest, armor stand, what have you.
Add a stockpile for weapons/armor/ammo.
(Q) a bed/cabinet/armor stand and Make a Barracks.
Set the squad to Train, Sleep, and Store items there.
They'll automatically train if their schedule is set to Active/Training!

thanks i have currently got two men in my military and have set them to train in my barracks, which currently only has beds. i'm finding it hard to find men that i can add, most my people already have at least 2 jobs. my mason is also a herbalist for example, and annoyingly he always takes plant gathering as a priority over working in the workshop.

Please tell me you don't play with the minimap up the entire time blocking a 1/3rd of your view

pressing tab could be the next best thing for you.

Makes charcoal that you can use to forge raw metal or smelt ore into raw metal.
