So, is this it?
« on: December 19, 2010, 11:32:01 pm »

I started playing DF tonight, had to watch some tutorials to get me going.

So now I've recently gotten my first migrants and things are going pretty ok! Except...

What I'm wondering:
So, I chose an area to embark in and have built/mined in that area.
Is the entire game limited to that area? I've found no way to get out of the area (see the other ones), etc. It just stops when I get to the edge.
Tried reading the wiki but it says nothing about what hotkeys to press for hopping over to the next area.

This didn't make much sense to me as I thought that big world would be "alive" and playable. Hope I'm wrong.

Sorry for being register-go1post-nagger.

Yea, the area you embark on is the area you are limited to in Fortress mode. You can explore as much of the world as you'd like in Adventure mode, and read about events in the world's history using Legends.

You are confined to that area, but the world eventually will come alive because things will come knocking when you least expect it

As a note, don't click on least, expect and it unless you like spoiling things.

If you think the area you embarked in is a bit small, keep in mind that you can make the embark area bigger or smaller when you're selecting the space on the world map. Also keep in mind that the larger the area is, the more processing power the game will eat up, and the lower your FPS will be, so unless you have a high end computer, you may want to stick to the default size or smaller.

Wow, fast replies!

I see. That was a bit disappointing, but the fact that things will knock on my door is a comfort  :) Guess I gotta get prepared.
And yeah, I'm using largest area on a high end computer, runs fine atm.

Thanks for the answers guys, I'll continue playing till the baddies eat me.

You get used to fast replies around here. There's players in all time zones, most of them frequent the forums, and something like 1/4 of the people on the forums have the game running in the background so they can double check things before posting  :D

However, complicated new username,

In the future! We should be able to go to other sections with the upcoming (as in a year maybe. >.>) Army arc. Though the Fort will probably forever be limited to the embark selection, but combined with the Caravan Arc and the Army arc, the fort should be come a center stone for several smaller villages.

So yea, right now things will be coming toward your fort from above and where else they can weasel themselves into. But in the future, we'll be able to interact with things outside our embark screen.

Also, a belated Welcome to the Forum.
Armok will probably come by and hug you later.

I think the number is larger than 1/4, TBH.

How can you talk about the game and not be running it in the background?  Besides, we have to be doing SOMETHING while we wait for the next step of our mega-projects to finish.

Elves aren't environmentalists, they're the smartest businessmen ever created in Dwarf Fortress.  Think about it, the only plants they want you to use are the ones they supply.  They even go so far as to attack you for producing too much lumber of your own.  They're not hippies, they're violent businessmen!

I'm not either. My poor compy couldn't handle it. :(

Come to think of it, it can't handle much, these days.

According to the wiki, cats (adult ones) provide about 15 units of edible food, but kittens only provide skulls. I recommend locking em' up in a cage until they mature, then butchering them and eating them.

Do note that if a cat is someone's pet, you can do nothing to control them.

The result of too many pet cats is known as a Catsplosion, and is widely feared.
